A noise heavy, relatively relaxed indie rock debut that is by all means satisfying, but I can't help but feel as though Carnavas is somewhat forgetable. Maybe it's because I am utterly exhausted.

Sometimes it?s hard to find a album that blows away your expectations, and Carnavas is one of those albums. From Melatonin to Waste It On to Common Reactor, one of the best indie rock albums Silversun Pickups has ever written.

Silversun Pickups blend fuzzy and distorted guitars (a la grunge/shoegaze), great drums, ambient sounds, and a unique voice to craft a pleasing and solid indie rock and alternative rock debut.

This is the album that the other band with the initials S.P. should have made had they stuck with the Siamese Dream sound. Try as you may, you can't deny the overwhelming influence that early 90s Pumpkins has on this band. I mean they even have the same type of lineup as the original four members of Smashing Pumpkins. However, the new SP takes the ball that the old SP dropped long ago and runs with it formidably. In place of the melodramatic sometimes whiny vocals of Billy Corgan, the Pickups frontman Brian Aubert puts in place airy and powerful vocals which at times sound feminine. Silversun Pickups throw well-placed ambiance and varied tempos into the mix along with excellent songwriting to create an alt rock winner that manages to be extremely influenced by Chicago's favorite sons (and daughter), but is far from a carbon copy.

Silversun Pickups reveals the power of the Smashing Pumpkins, sans the angst. Carnavas is more of a renovation of Smashing Pumpkins than a remake, if that makes any sense. If it doesn't make sense to you, then you should give this one a spin or two.

There's really nothing negative to be said about Silversun Pickups' debut album Carnavas. Breakout singles "Well Thought Out Twinkles" and "Lazy Eye" play splendidly, of course; but the real joy in the album comes from the realization that, while those songs are fantastic, they don't represent the only good music on the album. SSPU can do it slow, like in "Three Seed," or quick, like in "Common Reactor." They perfect their style established in their EP Pikul, and manage to sound chaotic while remaining listenable.

A mix of Indie and Grunge. Who would have thought? Though Silversun Pickups do the said experiment the perfect justice with Carnavas. An album heavily influenced by shoegaze and indie genres, it hits the spot perfectly.

After only one EP, Silversun Pickups were just another American rock band making their way around the alternative rock circuit. How it was even fathomable for them to create such a beautiful work of art at such an early stage is almost beyond comprehension. It all just doesn't make sense...and then you listen to the record itself.
The music - a sparkling yet hard-hitting daydream, a sunlight-infested room of buzzes and brilliant shine. On showcase throughout, Brian Aubert's penetrating howls and helium rasps make for one of the most unique and genuinely interesting voices in rock music today. The four musicians that comprise Silversun tesellate in exceptional style, contrasting energy levels and developing a sound that recalls shoegaze, industrial, indie rock, grunge and the nineties movement of rock (no, not the goddamn Pumpkins); yet at the same time a movement and creation on its own level. The layered meanderings of "Future Foe Scenarios", the steady rise and culminate explosion of "Lazy Eye" and the jazz-like "Waste it On" all present a listener with an amazing array of versatile rock songs that are amongst the best of the decade, let alone its year of release. And that is just the beginning - make no bones about it, Carnavas is an essential rock record.

Somewhere between Sonic Youth and Smashing Pumpkins sits Silversun Pickups, this past year's surprising hit (alliteration much?). The band manage both to be Indie Rock heroes and Alternative Radio darlings, merging Grunge-inflected straightforwardness and vocals with great guitar hooks and shimmering keyboard and achieving fantastic results. Carnavas is a very consistent and even record, one that doesn't simply revolve around the stellar singles "Lazy Eye" and "Well Thought-Out Twinkles", but focuses on keeping the listener happy throughout. There simply isn't a bad song in the bunch. The generally darker atmosphere of the production plays itself out well over this solidly-flowing album, while the band peppers the experience with enthusiasm and energy.
These guys are the real thing, genuinely concerned with writing good songs and making a great album from start to finish. Keep an eye open for their next album, because if this one is any indication, we've got our next Indie Rock legends on the rise.
