Phil Elverum's work as Mount Eerie seems to be hearkening back to the elemental song cycle tradition of really-old-man times. Not like the '50s or '40s whatever, not the '20s stuff F. Scott probably dug...we're talking a huddle of drunk bar-dwellers in a grimy fire-heated pub rasping a request: "Phil, sing us a song about the water." And Phil nods but adds this: "But know that the only time you'll hear me is when I come up for breath." Then he cranks up his amps and performs Knife-like instrumentals and really clues you in to what he's really up to with Mount Eerie, what the water's like. Elverum's ocean is immersive, cerebral, loud, and can support your body for 38.6 minutes. Float for a while, and expect the fire.

Ocean Roar is essentially the audible recording of the ocean's roar, in all of its beauty and rage, and one could not ask for anything more.

Ok I was not ready for this. Usually this guy bores me with his music and saddens me with his lyrics. Here, well, fuck. It feels so cathartic. The production is particularly abrasive and drony. Not the kind of album I will often revisit, but an album interesting enough to deserve multiple re-listens. The project name has never worn his moniker so well.

at times subtle and slow, at others ferocious and aggressive, at all times flowing brilliantly to create what might be elverum's work since the glow pt. 2, ocean roar is simply magnificent, and easily one of the most magical albums of the year.

I liked the production here on Ocean Roar. Especially the hi-hat mix; how they pan into both ears and the the effort put into the piano when it pops up. Of course, the highlight is the gritty guitars and drones that lash into your ears on this album but it's nice to have those child-like twinkles that almost lure you into a false sense of security only to atmospherically amp up the discomfort and take control of the imagery when needed too. Great album. I loved it.
