One would think that a band as diverse and forward-thinking as Dead Can Dance would after a
long 16 years, return with an album sprawling with exciting and fresh sounds. Well the album
is sprawling alright, with influences drawn from cultures all around the world as usual for
the duo, but while Anastasis has variety, all of the vast elements on here is
everything fans will come to expect from Dead Can Dance, as opposed to any new musical
pursuits. The problem with that isn't that this album sounds outdated or irrelevant - it
wouldn't really be possible for a band that basis their sound off of world music to sound
outdated - it's just that this music isn't as ground-breaking as it was back in the 80's and
90's, and this same type of music isn't nearly comparable to, or as great of a display of
what defines Dead Can Dance's sound as the albums they released in back in their prime were.
This will really only please die-hard fans, knowing that Dead Can Dance hasn't strayed far
at all from the music the they have grown to love and expect delivered. Realistically
though, for a group that is known for being as innovative and ambitious as their sound leads
them on to be, Anastasis is a very disappointing, safe, and unremarkable album made
by people that are known for having such an exquisite taste for the wildly experimental and
uncommon, especially after 16 years.
