Sure, there's a fair share of duds in here, but the songs that truly soar and/or tear at the
heartstrings (including that 12-song streak kicking off the album and culminating with "The
Book of Love") are so perfect that I can't see this album as anything but a masterpiece.

Some might call a triple LP containing exactly 69 songs pretentious in nature, and while they might be right in execution it's the farthest thing from it. With everything from upbeat synthpop to beautifully arranged chamber pop Stephin Merritt makes full use of all his musical knowledge to make an album that's so sarcastic about love and love songs it'll be sure to turn into your post-breakup album. It's bitter, it's snotty, and it's wonderful.

An album spanning 3 discs, nearly 3 hours of love songs. Who would've thought this cliche music geek dream could be pulled off so well? There is enough material on the first disc alone to keep someone entertained possibly forever; but each disc has its fair share of classic tracks and welcome oddities, all spiked with so much character and dry humor. Bass-y male vocals beside innocent female vocals bring a nice variety to the songs.

The best album I've heard of this nature since Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness and The Moon and Antarctica.

What you have to do with this is give this whole monster two full listens and really focus. Don't find out which songs are exceptional from different people because chances are you'll find yourself appreciating other songs more on this gem. That's the key with this album, its so damn personal that it literally creates different results from everyone. Weed out the stuff that is by no means filler, but is just not something that you think could appeal to you with subsequent listens. Then put the stuff you did thoroughly enjoy together and you've got yourself a unique powerhouse of a super-album. Then the more you listen to your own super-album, the more it will connect with you. And trust me, there's a lot to connect with; the mess of emotions portrayed in all aspects of a romantic relationship is just dazzling when combined with the catchiness and musical ability of the Magnetic Fields. Every so often, go back and listen to the whole thing, and it's likely that you'll find a whole new plethora of meaningful songs you idiotically missed, and you'll like those even more. It's like filtering water over and over again until you've created a collection that is so remarkably pure and its brilliant.
