Still too early to tell if this might actually be Aesop's most successful outing yet, but at the very least it's certainly his most consistent release. From purely a musical perspective, the beats have never sounded as urgent and bombastic as they are here, and while Aesop is still infatuated with multisyllabic rhyme schemes it's less of a issue here; instead of saturating the beat with an assortment of absurd pop-culture references and questionable non-sequiturs, Aesop ends up working perfectly in tandem with his background, feeding off the energy rather than simply supplementing it.
In a year that's already seen El-P dominate hip hop, Skelethon shows that the other indie hip hop star has still got plenty to say, and this new album is truly something to get excited about.

This album steps up for Aesop and pushes him further on a tangent of his own away from all other hip hop artists. Aes' lyrics really get deeper in this release also. All round genuinely amazing release.

After Def Jux folded, it seemed like Aesop Rock was completely on his own, and though it was officially released on Rhymesayers, Skelethon reflects that very clearly. Almost everything on the record is done by Aes himself, from the lyricism to the production to the performances, and it is actually quite great. It's no great venture to say that the first half of the record is unequivocally the best non-Labor Days material he's ever done, with crisp abstract beats and artful stories about death and relationships between humans being woven effortlessly. There's even a couple of legitimately good hooks here, which have never been his forte. Aes' rapping and lyrical acrobatics are unsurprisingly excellent, but his own production, formerly a glaring weak point for him, is consistently well-done and occasionally steals the show. More or less, Skelethon charts the growth of Aesop Rock not only as an artist but as a person as well, making it an interesting and intimate abstract hip-hop record.

This album wore down on me a little after a year or so kinda like Daylight did for me back in the day, but it is still absolutely fantastic and enjoyable. The only records of his I find better are Float and Appleseed.
