Elliott Smith is one of the most beloved and respected singer/ songwriters of this generation, and after listening to past work, anyone can see why. Poetic lyrics over beautiful vocals make for a great listening experience. Sadly, Smith took his own life before even this album was released, but his work lives on. With the release of From A Basement On The Hill, Smith’s body of work has proven, even in death, he can move people. Another great album lyrically, good guitar work and keys at times. Not his best album bu any stretch of the imagination, but solid nonetheless. Recommend this to anyone that likes music, that simple.

"From a Basement on the Hill" is the first posthumous record of one of the greatest artists of our generation. This release was not complete by Elliott, which gave a sadder and morbid tone to some songs. I feel very bad when i listen to the entire album, because on many occasions it seems that i felt what he felt from a distance. All this suffering and all the pain imposed on such perfect and incredible songs... cannot fit into any definition. In the end, "From a Basement on the Hill" is a great tribute and a almost perfect farewell. Goodbye, legend.

Amazing in retrospect seeing as this a posthumous release. Almost never are unfinished albums even near as enjoyable as "finished" albums, but maybe by a combination of Elliott's lyrical and musical style and the fact of this being his swan-song makes this surprisingly very good. Forever your songs will be in my mind and my heart Elliott... 4.5/5

About a year ago, a friend and I were having a discussion about how overrated Conor Oberst is, when my friend mentioned that he thought Elliott Smith was a lot better. When I asked who Elliott Smith was, my friend replied by handing me a copy of "From a Basement on a Hill" and assuring me, "this guy blows Conor Oberst out of the water".
When I got home, I immediately put the disc into my CD Player, and started working on my homework, meaning the CD to be background noise. Than I got to the song "Don't Go Down" and heard the line, "I met a girl, snowball in hell/ she was hard/ and as cracked as the liberty bell". I immediately stopped my homework and just listened. Amazing record. Amazing musician. He is easily one of the best lyricists of the last two decades.

Elliott Smith has impacted so many lives and helped so many people through tough times just through his music. This album completely upholds his tradition of amazingly moving as well as catchy songs. Songs like "Memory Lane" show his more happy, jumpy side and songs like "Let's Get Lost" and "Twilight" show his more serious and intimate side. This album definitely captures who Elliott Smith is as a very respected musician.
