| 5.0 classic | Superreallycool | July 22nd 15 | I've always been a huge metal head. From Slayer, to St. Vitus, to Cancer, I just loved metal. While I enjoyed other forms of music fine, no other genre could compare to metal. Such was my devotion, I started an Instagram account dedicated to making jokes about metal (metal_motherland). However, about 2 weeks ago, I found that music in general just bored me. There were some exceptions, such as Floods by Pantera, but I could only count 14 songs on my phone that didn't bore me... out of 3,000. I spent many hours searching for new music, but nothing truly resonated with me. I almost gave up on music entirely and began to accept that maybe I just was moving on. That was, until I heard this album. Listening to this, I got chills from it. I got an adrenaline rush from music being played mostly on drums, sax, and bass. However, I doubt any of you really care too much about my story, all you care about is if the album is good, and if I haven't made it clear already, yes I think it's good. Very, very good. Seriously, it doesn't matter what kind of music you like, you at least should try this.

| 5.0 classic | Erwann S. EMERITUS | January 21st 20 | An underground cult classic. So much more than a mere twinkly core record, this is a hidden jazzy'n'mathy emo-influenced instrumental rock gem. While such tags immediately bring American Football to mind, Clever Girl manages to create its own sound. Instead of reminding cold Autumn afternoons with their music, the band brings a sunny-yet-chill-Spring-mornings atmosphere. The production is as crispy as the best chicken can be: each instrument can be heard loud and clear, and since each musician knows what he's doing, the result is a lush and upbeat mathy rock EP. On top of that, the absence of vocals allows the music to display a much happier tone than their counterparts: while emo is a genre known for its sadboi themes, NDaBitJR is seamlessly flowing among happy tunes, whether is straight-up bombastic mathy rock (Elm or Teleblister) or the hazy and chill brass-led Sleepyhead Symphony. This 100% instrumental ethos helps the band avoid the almost unavoidable math rock/emo trap : cheesy lyrics badly sung by an adolescent dude. Such a distinctive sound compared to their counterparts, as well as the mystery of a band that only released one record, are the pillars of Clever Girl's cult following. A 2018 vinyl reissue, plus the band Cuzco mentioning them in their 2017 track We Miss You Clever Girl truly established Clever Girl as a tremendous addition into the 'did one record and then disbanded' catalog.

| 5.0 classic | Bedex | April 16th 22 | I was going into this thinking this would be at risk of being bumped down because it felt like one my weakest fives, but in reality man my adolescent love for this has not budged an inch. Yes it is a very lighthearted obscure little record and isn't a grand album by any means, but it just makes me feel all fluffy and comfy and I can't not love it. Its crisp production and intricate yet delicate playing take you right into the band's happy, soothing, sunny spring atmosphere that I want to live in forever, and for a record that is after all merely noodly modern math rock with a sax, that atmosphere is incredibly strongly evoked. Contrary to some other records I used to love, this one seems to gains value over time (at least for now), because on top of not feeling silly, there is a sweet taste of happy nostalgia that overarchs the memories I tie it with. I struggle to think of a record that stands so far above everything else I know in its genre solely out of the sheer goodness of its execution. This isn't the most technical math-rock (which I think is a strength as they know to remain subtle), this isn't the only math-rock band that uses brass, hell it's not even the only math-rock band called Clever Girl. But to me it is special, and it makes me happy every dam time i hear it. 5.0
