Very promising, but overall falls short to me due to my dislike for Metalcore. Supercool progressions and ideas generally, but unfortunately much of the music is cemtered around typical core chug and breakdowns.

Between the Buried and Me's self-titled debut is rough around the edges, to be sure. But it is also one of my favourite records by the band; and, indeed, I find myself returning to it more than any of their other material. (In particular, the opening and closing tracks.) Sure, some songs drag ("What We Have Become," "Fire for a Dry Mouth") and "Use of a Weapon" is a total dud, but the raw talent on display is astounding, and there's none of the pretension or wankery present which plagues some of their later releases. Plus, I like the growls a lot on this one.

(3/8/18): North Carolinian metal act Between the Buried and Me's eponymous debut release is worth more than this site's average suggests. Even when taking into consideration the fairly sloppy dynamic between Tommy Rogers and then-drummer Will Goodyear's cleans, the self-titled album has a fair amount going for it in terms of instrumentation, audio mixing, and overall enjoyment factor. The Silent Circus fixed whatever flaws could be found within this 8-track record - and then Alaska upgraded the quality of the music even further - but without comparing S/T to those two outings plus BTBAM's newer material, it stands incredibly well on its own (couple small warts and all). Decent 4.

Sloppy, misguided and ultimately unenjoyable. Between the Buried and Me didn't exactly glide into the scene with grace. From the almost unbearably bad vocal work to the nonsensical song structures, boring breakdowns and a horrible attempt at being progressive, practice and a few more albums would see Between the Buried and Me come into their own sound and style.

Between the Buried and Me has been steadily growing on me throughout my time on this site, and by now, I can fully say that I adore Colors, The Great Misdirect, Alaska, and the Silent Circus. But this eponymous debut continues in its astounding ability to hold absolutely nothing of interest. One of the most disappointing releases by an otherwise excellent band out there today.

This band can't do anything wrong! I went back to their first album expecting it to be meh and found out this album is anything but. The debut by BTBAM is almost as good, if not, better than The Silent Circus.

A brutally good album no doubt, but BTBAM do not show their full potential on here and the musicianship doesn't seem as "tight" as on later releases such as "Alaska" or "Colors". Still a great debut, though.
