Emerging from Detroit, Sponge released their debut album Rotting Pinata in the summer of 1994 at a time where the world was preparing for life following Cobain's death. Rotting Pinata is a melodic alternative rock album with post-grunge elements of the 90s, deserving more credit and recognition than probably has. It is full of strong melodies and infectious choruses, without necessarily being lyrically sophisticated.
