  • Decay Please just stop, it was rather humorous for a few days; but now it has become montonous and to be honest, immature. So i used the word in the wrong context, the aocolypse is not going to start. So i am asking you to just, please stop. Its getting tiresome.

    December 3 08:52 PM
  • Havey i prefer bach on modern instruments, with few exceptions (like the english suites). the instruments of his time were limited but his genius wasn't; he himself transcribed many of his works to be played on multiple instruments, his music independent of the medium used. if we aim only for historically authentic/'correct' sound then we'd be confining him to his own period, and he wouldn't want that

  • Havey before i hop into bed i'll ask: have you acquainted yourself with either BWV 1001-1006 or 1014-1019 yet? this is some of my favorite music in the world right now:
    December 2 06:28 PM
  • Havey id like to expand on it in more detail but i really gotta sleep, though *spoiler alert* i can't really put my finger on it (i have some thoughts though). i don't get the same feeling listening to the french suites, at least not to the same extent. haven't tried perahia's recordings of the english suites hmm, might be worth a look
    December 2 06:23 PM
  • Havey while most of bach's keyboard works are are rather well suited for piano interpretations, I can't seem to shake off the feeling that something is lost when the english suites are rendered on piano instead of the harpsichord. i still like them but

  • Cygnatti it also comes off as though you are out to get them, out to denounce their religious claims/beliefs. which is really a double standard, it's a travesty when good/moral "christians" are being challenged but absolutely fair game when they do so against any other religion or atheism. talk about entitlements.
    November 27 01:16 PM
  • Cygnatti that's ridiculous. I would have hoped that people would have been less inclined to do so but the simple fact that you're in europe and not over here. :/ this might be harsh for me to say but I really hope that sometime in the near future practitioners of (particularly) christian religions would be extinct. urgh.

  • treeqt. bringing together war and popular music (he calls it "unterhaltungs musik" = ~entertainment music~) is bound to fail because popular music has consume and amusement as primary function and it is by its nature too shallow for such a serious topic. he also says that popular music fails and becomes unenjoyable when a singer sings about how he can't stand war and stuff.

    November 11 05:12 AM
  • ethos which is why, for a brief period of time - i would only rate 5s or not rate (i didn't connect to a lot of the new music i was initially listening to). i don't enjoy pinning a numerical system to music, i've thought it's immature for a real long time - knowing that i have no place or say in the matter, but i do want people to explore stuff and see how passionate i am about music if they visit this page - giving back: that's the main reason i decided to start again, i love this community a lot
    November 11 04:12 AM
  • ethos rating for me is important (now) because it shows my progression and personality, it also leaves behind a trace for people to follow and enjoy what i've thankfully had the opportunity to discover - i want people to glance by it and have the same chance i did to possibly check things out for themselves - experiencing it on their own, for when i'm no longer on here . . if what i reflect isn't an honest/genuine depiction, why rate at all?
    November 11 04:11 AM
  • ethos calls it's just a thing or two i've picked up on since jumping into new material - i'm really excited to check out good morning, good night and see what comes from it: ullmann is growing on me as well, as far as music goes i feel like there are no rules/boundaries, there never has been. we just innately draw them for ourselves and connect through that with others - time and patience are all that is really required if a mind is set in the right place and we determine all of this for ourselves
    November 11 04:11 AM
  • ethos although i do enjoy re-visiting them and seeing what different perspectives i see it in from each separate listen. i also don't get why people just collectively lump or flock to certain albums and don't branch out past them.. i've noticed that divine music from jail cell/quartet are pretty popular but no one really takes the time to explore past them despite claiming how much enjoyment they draw in from it - not trying to come across as conceited or draw any judgement,
    November 11 04:10 AM
  • ethos world of echo really did it for me, i love that album to death as well a bunch of claudio's/your ratings opened the door and excited me to a different way to interpret/approach music that i always felt existed, i don't appreciate rating albums that i don't feel as though i have come to terms with (i.e. polly bradfield, (quartet veliotos, sugimoto, etc.), kazushige kinos***a) though. i'm not going to rate something that i don't feel as though i can connect to or understand at that moment
    November 11 04:09 AM
  • ethos share that passion. electroacoustic (improvised) music isn't something i want to isolate apart from everything and diligently pursue, but i do draw a lot of emotion from it and i thoroughly enjoy a strong amount of what i've heard - without knowing entirely why, which is basically a bonus in attempting to understand/the listen. yes, i consider myself more along the lines of empiric relation (so glad you mentioned that, it fits what needs to be expressed perfectly) with the music i hear
    November 11 04:08 AM
  • ethos when i don't actually know what's going on. being (it) unfamilair and giving things time to settle and seep into my mind to become better understood is undoubtedly my favorite aspect about music and i find that most things i listen to doesn't "bore" me (which is rarely never possible through music) but it doesn't put up much of a fight as it used to in my younger years when i was discovering so many new things left and right, i crave that a lot and i find that a few people on this site
    November 11 04:08 AM
  • ethos regarding deterministic/non-deterministic, i'm not entirely certain on what you're aiming towards as a question but with improvised music (or music in general) i would label myself as non-deterministic for sure. i'm constantly changing my mind on sounds, re-examining them, listening to stuff under different environments/settings or moods in hopes of breaking off into thoughts that i never noticed before - i like trying to get behind artist's intent or purpose on what is presented
    November 11 03:51 AM
  • ethos persnickety criteria for what i listen to is one of the best words i feel as though that can be pinned to what i look for in music, i mean it's just sometimes some of the most random notes being hit or the manner in which they're being played that get my mind thinking of all sorts of ideas/progression from that point on and i love seeing how musicians explore or toy with what's going on, tracing my mind to their own - it gives me lots of ideas for some reason -- - -
    November 11 03:50 AM
  • ethos can't comprehend your love comment properly but i'm getting a vibe that it means well so thx but remember ily always regardless of it's intent :* and wow, i'm so glad you pitched all of that other stuff on my wall. i was actually thinking about a lot on what you mentioned earlier today at work//zoning out, how drastically my taste in music has shifted as of late but how naturally i feel it has grown into what it is now, pretty coincidental that you brought it up

  • LifeAsAChipmunk I'm sure many americans aren't even aware of taoism's existence. the overbearing religious sects of american politics are incredibly misguided/hypocritical. rich CEOs try to brush of their horrible ways by being christian, but simultaneously and conveniently disregard that jesus said that a rich man could never enter heaven. also this firm idea that the founders were hard christians is complete nonsense: the constitution says there should be no national religion, and most founders were deists.

  • LifeAsAChipmunk ah yes, I can't believe I missed this the last time but another reason for my dislike of nationalism is the americans' 'patriotism'. I have a tendency to scoff at the overarching believe that they/we are "the best country in the world". the completely unreasonable hatred and discrimination towards muslims: drones, patriot act, paranoia. so what if there's a mosque being build near ground zero. omg, every muslim must be a spy! it seems like actual freedom comes only after safety and paranoia here

  • LifeAsAChipmunk I'm actually very left/democrat I guess but I've seen some remark that u.s. democrats would be considered conservative in europe so who knows. the lack of asian political representation or even consideration bothers me. although I've never found pride in being asian (stemming from my indignation towards my parents and distaste for their culture), I still find that asians are very interesting minority demographic when in terms of american politics (odd mix of both right and left values).

  • LifeAsAChipmunk how do you feel about cultural assimilation? I find that if you're moving to a country, you should indeed respect that country's customs but to always expect such willing assimilation is foolhardy. it reminds me of the piss poor argument: 'don't like it? then leave!' it's really inconsiderate, and looking into some nationalist arguments, I find a lot of them strikingly selfish.
