| Crawl I see you like Frightened Rabbit, what do you think of the latest one?
| Jots drop into the contrib forum when you get a chance
| InsightOut You have amazing taste going on there Ali... we would appreciate it a lot if you would spend some time and review Phase's stuff... cheers
| zakalwe I look forward to reading it mate. The lyrics on the thing are (as always) magnificent
| zakalwe I need to try and contain myself here but have you heard 'The Most Important Place In The World' yet Ali dude? It's ridiculously good.
| StrangerofSorts 'Jonny, who's one of my favourite writers on this site' Don't think I didn't see that! (;
| sspedding thank you. Feels nice to have a moment in the sun.
| sspedding where can the lists be viewed please mate?
| zakalwe Amazing! Cheers dude it's made my day, that new track is something special.
| klap haha yeah those are two of my favorites. Mystikal always makes me laugh
| klap try https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zuzSG3q68Kc
| cloakanddagger Hey man, sorry for the late response to your post on my profile, I haven't checked my shoutbox in weeks. Are you still writing that list? I can provide a blurb on the DSHS EP if you want. :)
| Arcade are you going to be reviewing Girls in Peacetime?
| sspedding Devastator is the stand out track. Cheers
| Wizard Skin Crawler is by far my favourite!
| Wizard My email address is limpystub@hotmail.com so look out for that in your junk mail if you haven't received an email as of this moment.
| ComeToDaddy Sent through that blurb for Aaron West. Let me know if you need help with any other albums :] and thanks for organizing all this
| Wizard Can I write it tomorrow morning? Just finished my huge top metal in 2014 list.Love that album by the way.
| ComeToDaddy Yeah for sure, I'd love to do that. Should I model the blurbs length and format off the staff end-of-year list? Just let me know where to send it, and I'll sort it out ASAP. I'd be happy to contribute more blurbs too if you're short of any
| beachdude Absolutely man, I'd be happy to! I'm assuming you want it to be a short paragraph... where do I send it?
| Arcade oi so you should like review more you're one of the best writers on the site so please
| ExplosiveOranges "Don't ever call me ****ing English again." Gotta love Malcolm.
| DaveyBoy Yeah, could not believe the size of the bid for Long. Especially since he will be a sub once JayRod comes back. Unsure the 1st weekend told us much about either of our teams. Saints always take it up to top teams. beating the bottom teams is more important at this stage.
| DaveyBoy How could anyone know. Its almost a totally different team. My pessimistic self says just to avoid relegation. And you with your mob? A bit quieter than usual.
| DaveyBoy If you are not already in this league, epl fantasy code is 224812-61122
| zakalwe I moved onto that one and definitley dig. It's just that bloody 'something to believe in' tune hits me in the heart like nothing else. It's absolutely incredible.
| zakalwe Thanks for reviewing that King Creosote album dude. An absolute classic would have passed me by otherwise. It's a stunner.
| Arcade I'll see if I can find it today. Living in a crappy town in Australia doesn't serve well for my chances (I'm one of those weird people who don't pirate music)
| Arcade Found out I was trying to put a .zip into my iTunes (don't ask...). But yeah, the singers voice is superb. Haven't checked any of their albums but today is my record shopping day so I might go get it, so far I'm only getting Television's "Marquee Moon"
| Arcade that Twilight Sad album is a ****ing ripper
| DaveyBoy LOL. I wish Big Sams style of play was as adventurous.
| DaveyBoy I didn't know he called Pellegrini that. Definitely embarrassing, even if I chuckled a little. Although, I prefer Mourinho vs Big Sam in the stand-up comedy act department.
| DaveyBoy Dunno about the player vs manager argument. Not that I have thought it through. But its just a really bad look. I think players are more likely to get caught up in the moment and physicality happens every moment youre out there. That's not the case for managers. It would be more - for want of a better word - predetermined for them. This may sound really harsh, but I think he could be gone for the remainder of the season.
| DaveyBoy WTF Pardew. That wasn't good. I cant see him getting off lightly.
| zakalwe Indeed it's all so trite and forced. However I've also found that as I've got older the ones that actually have a point still hit unbelievably hard and resonate to the bones. It's something that can't be ripped off and "faked" now let's start a band and prevent everyone's minds turning to mush!
| zakalwe Despite me rant it does have it's moments :D Is it possible to grow out of albums? They always have a place. Incidentally when I was 17ish one of my faves was The boy with the arab strap, that led onto arab strap. Heady days indeed!
| zakalwe I couldn't agree more. Yep TDAG. I take it it's one that holds something for you and as a result it's cool but you have a ridiculous amount of greats ranked and that album is laughably "try hard" in comparison, see-through and a rip off.
| zakalwe Ha. The bafflement continues.Love Eels. Mark Everett is one of the greats. Belle and Seb are great as well, it could have been a brilliant career.
| zakalwe What are the other contenders for your fave bands dude? I'm still baffled by that 5d bit of fakery by someone who has such impeccable taste.
| tempest-- Ah, nice. If you don't post it here, could you please send me the link? I'd love to give it a read :D
| tempest-- Are you going to be reviewing St. Vincent?
| rapedbyelephants hey Alit, you're a girl right? do you want to have sex with me?
| StrangerofSorts I haven't no. From a few minutes of a track on youtube they're reasonably similar, but FaR is less tropey (didn't want to use the word cliched) and way more personal. Deep psychological horror instead of spooky ghosts. Am liking this though so thanks for the shout - I'm surprised it passed me.
| SgtPepper I missed his at first, but yeah it's right on. I doubt any of them even actually heard Lulu anyway. Most of these guys think no differently than sheep, just because the majority say it's a bad album, it automatically becomes a fact set in stone in their minds. Anyway, it's nice to see someone like you who actually honours the man and appreciates his music. I was thinking about writing a blog about Lou's career. I wanted to do the same with Ray Manzarek and The Doors, but I never had the time.
| SgtPepper I loved your comment on Lulu. It's strange how everyone keeps mentioning that album, as if it were some significant career-shattering event that needs to be mentioned in their eulogies/tributes, as opposed to what it actually was - a simple project for the hell of it. Anyway, it's nice to see some maturity and respect in a group where it's so rarely found. Cheers, Ali.
| Days of Future Passed I just re-read your Alt-J review, great work! Could you recommend any similar artists?
| Adabelle Hey Ali, are you doing the fantasy football league this year? The code is 1661197-367139 if you're interested, no worries if you aren't
| fogza Not really - to be honest I have limited funds and time to listen to new stuff (plus there's no good legal download service in SA) - I actually never even listened to their last album. Shocking, sad and shameful, but true.
| fogza You should write a review for Philophobia, I think it would be interesting to see what someone else who loves the album has to say, especially if it's a different take. I was shocked to see no-one had ever reviewed it.
| anarchistfish weird, someone must've fiddled with the list. tbh, it comes out almost exactly when I'm off to university so I'll probably be preoccupied with other things. have it.
| anarchistfish claims list says you have the new chvrches. what's up there cos I'm preeeee sure I stamped my grubby paws on that back when I first caught sight of lauren mayberry's bum
| DaveyBoy Yeah, just commented on your review. Dont take the redundant comment personally. Unsure when you posted the review on the other website, but felt that kind of review is best served nearer to the release date. Hope that makes sense.
| Crawl I really dig that song.
| Crawl Hey man, have you heard the new single by Manics? if yes, what do you think of it? Oh and thanks for the Graph Rabbit review, awesome album.
| CelestialDust Awesome man. It's my most anticipated album of the year after hearing their single. Excited that you like it.
| CelestialDust Got an advanced copy of the new sigur ros? noticed you rated it already
| OmairSh Hey Ali where are you from? Random I know, I see a muslim name and I'm curious :P
| anarchistfish I see you 4d savages. I don't know if you wanted to review it or not but I gave up my dib so it's there if you want it
| breakingthefragile lol I bet. I actually wrote some movie/music reviews for my high school's newspaper when I was a senior. Some of them I ended up transferring over here to Sputnik in soundoff form. The college I'm currently attending doesn't have a campus newspaper as of yet, but I'd love to get my opinions out there more if they ever get one up and running.
| breakingthefragile I think it's awesome that you listen to so many new weekly releases man, it's good to know another contrib that does so. It's always interesting to see what you rate certain stuff.
| clercqie Haha nice. I'll be aqcuiring it soon enough as well.
| clercqie I like the meandering length of most of these tunes. It's fitting with the dreamy atmosphere he's creating.
| clercqie I'm just a sucker for that dreamy Americana sound. And his lyrics are just so good! Been on constant rotation here for the last couple of days. I can't get enough of it.
| clercqie Way to pull the new Kurt Vile av rating down already :p
| SupercolliderMusic Thanks so much for the It's A Wonderful Life album. it is one of my favorites. I thought about including it in the list in the first place, but i figured it wasnt quite acoustic enough.
| anarchistfish Really? I thought the opposite. Idk, I guess lyrically it's nothing special but if you treat it as a pop album it's pretty cool. It did take a couple of listens to click though
| anarchistfish I see you didn't like that new Bastille album, shame
| Brostep An Awesome Wave was on sale for 3 bucks on the Amazon MP3 store so I finally broke down and bought it, in part thanks to your review. Enjoying it so far though, it's quite fun
| omnipanzer I noticed you also rated I Am Kloot - Let It All In and just wanted to see if you had any thoughts on their previous albums.
| ABjordanMM Same with me and beautiful freak. It's up there.
| ABjordanMM Aha sorry. The lack of eels enthusiasm on this site hurts me.
| klap yo please submit an application in the forum thread :0
| DaveyBoy I tell you the other album which has surprisingly snuck up on me over the last few weeks. Little Comets. Im with you on the rating, but Im starting to think its a touch better than their debut.
| check out this band from nyc I found the other day, they got some decent tunes http://the-wives.bandcamp.com
| insomniac15 Well, at least you had fun, that's important. The new album is good anyway, too bad they didn't play some of their past gems.
| DaveyBoy I like most Welsh bands automatically for some reason, so definitely should give them a listen.
| insomniac15 New songs played already ? Probably those will surface in 3-4 years, because Jason is quite slow with the records. What were the highlights of the show ? Did they play anything from Let It Come Down ? I love that album.
| DaveyBoy Freaky. Im currently listening to that Maccabees album. Still undecided how much I like it. Its one of those so close, yet so far records. Look forward to their next one, put it that way. Thanks for the recos. Future of the Left was a maybe on my list, so that helps.
| DaveyBoy Noticed your lowish rating for the Grizzly Bear LP. Any chance I might like it. Any other last minute 2012 recos for me?
| insomniac15 Hey man. How was the Spiritualized concert ? I hope you were blown haha.
| Sowing Willie or Jom. Although you may get featured without asking since you're a contrib now
| iFghtffyrdmns haven't even gotten a chance to listen to it yet. between school/work being crazy and devoting the rest of my time to either applying for full time positions or finalizing my next semester study abroad program (in your country!) I haven't had the chance. is it awesome?
| DaveyBoy Yeah, contracts mean stuff all these days. As for the Saints, ever the entertainers, so nothing has changed. The reason why I began following them in the first place.
| DaveyBoy 8 years for a guy who couldnt get a team out of League One. Hmmm.
| CrisStyles Hey man, really enjoy your reviews. I was wondering if you could recommend me some Scottish music since I just started listening to Meursault after reading your review and both albums I listened to (the most recent release and All Creatures Will Make Merry) are very good and I've been a fan of Frightened Rabbit for awhile now.
| aok i was craving more vocalists and subtler beats. and so were a lot of other people
| aok you gonna review that new xx album? would be intrigued to see what you have to say, esp if you were a fan of the debut as well
| DaveyBoy Was gonna mention earlier to you, but doubt he will play any time soon so didnt bother. Played for the team I semi support. Long story, as theyre a new team. Big, young and raw. Initially looked clumsy, but it was more nervous. Consistently improved as season wore on. Good potential, but like all big and young centre backs, there is a fine line between success and failure. Coaching will be key, as will be his mental toughness. Surprised he got such a long contract, but what do they mean nowadays
| Xenophanes Thanks, Ali. Super glad to have you on board ; ]
| barcafan21 AND we both think american idiot is green day's best. the amount of hate that album receives here is ridiculous, first album i ever truly loved
| Fugue No problem mate, I'm sure it'll just inspire you to do even better than you usually do. I'm always still around, I just go through phases of caring and not caring and I'm in the latter right now, probably because I haven't written for a while (something I'm trying to fix).
| barcafan21 congratulations on the promotion. decided to look through your reviews, and we have the same rating for neighborhoods AND 21st century. i thought i was the only one
| FelixCulpa I guess you should have had your hopes up ;) Congrats.
| Sleaper grats on promotion dawg, my fellow wu lover.
| Sowing Congratulations Ali. Long overdue.
| Fugue Nice to see you get the credit you deserve with that promotion. 'Gratz and all.
| robin so yeah. overdue my friend. x
| Gyromania Awesome, we both got it =] Congrats!
| FromDaHood Congratulations on your promotion! Frankly, it should have happened a while ago but better late than never I suppose.
| cvlts Obvious promotion is obvious [2] ;]
| Yuli Dude, well-deserved promotion your way. Congrats! :]
| Xenophanes Obvious promotion is obvious but wonderful none the less. Very pleased to have you on board and I look forward to reading even more of your excellent stuff. Congrats dude!
| FelixCulpa "glad to see you applied for contrib, dude. best of luck to you." Ditto!
| Gyromania glad to see you applied for contrib, dude. best of luck to you.
| Recspecs Yeah me and some people pieced together a line-up without him and it actually looked great. It's going to be extremely weird not seeing him around, but I'm still buying a 125th anniversary RVP away kit.
| foxxxy You should totally apply for a better rating for Perfect From Now On like wtf man
| Xenophanes You should totally apply for contributor.
| robin i don't know if i can take any more heartbreak with gbv after class clown, but i look forward to yer review... ;)?
| DaveyBoy Nah, Joseph got to it before me. He scared me by also dibbing a new Foals LP, but I don't think it's a studio LP.
| DaveyBoy Hey Ali. Question. Has it come out or been rumoured what Cabaye said that made Tim Cahill lose his cool?
| Recspecs If we blow a spot in Europe I sincerely might cry.
| Recspecs Haha yeah I'm freaking out right now, I want Newcastle to get a Champions League berth but not at the expense of Arsenal. At least Liverpool lost the FA Cup.
| DaveyBoy Haha. During his post match interview, I almost felt sorry for him. Almost. The fact that he couldnt get a premier league squad up automatically says something about him.
| DaveyBoy We are going up, we are going up. Here come the Saints.
| mallen- You had me with the first sentence of the review, haha. Will definitely listen man, thanks.
| Fugue Awesome, will listen in a bit mate.
| klap hah yeah their publicist e-mailed me a while ago and i was pleasantly surprised considering i'm usually too lazy to follow up on those. i actually like it more than wu lyf right now because i can actually understand what's being sung
| DaveyBoy Yeah, being derivative is one thing. being derivative of one of the best albums of the past 20 years is another.
| DaveyBoy Cool. Im certain you will like at least one of their albums, Im just not sure which. Definitely try to listen to them both and in order.
| DaveyBoy Ali, I think u would really like 1 or both of the LPs from Fanfarlo. See my new review. Surprised you had yet to rate them actually.
| anarchistfish If it makes you feel any better, I got my face rubbed in today about england beating france (FOR ONCE) in the 6 nations
| Sowing And if you could email it to sowingsputnik@gmail.com ASAP, i'd be absolutely thrilled
| Sowing I'd love it if you could write a soundoff for your song. I'm going to try to get everyone to do just their own though, because separating the "submitted by" and "written by" credits would look too awkward
| Sowing Yeah man that would be great. Email is sowingsputnik@gmail.com
| anarchistfish they give out promo copies of albums to local papers? lol, no wonder so many albums are leaked these days
| anarchistfish Where'd you get a promo copy for the Young Guns album? :sHope it doesn't suck, cos I loved their last one and the song Bones is pretty awesome
| DaveyBoy Oh righteo. And LOL re VH. I try not to pigeon hole myself. Believe it or not, its actually pretty bloody good. There went my Lead Single Syndrome theory.
| DaveyBoy Didnt know it had leaked. Staff roped me into reviewing new Van Halen which is released same day. So probably wont get to Young Guns until mid next week. Loved their first LP. Will probably like this too since its the kind of music I naturally prefer. Sad to hear you hate it though.
| ProfessorVeerappan Neurosis is intense experimental artist.to start with neurosis you actually have to go through the chronological orderso you start with through silver in blood.Let me know how did you find it out.
| Tom93M Nice one. That's often described as their finest; and objectively speaking, i'd concur. But my favourite is probably 'Pornography'.
| Sgian Ah right, Leeds not in travelling distance? My geography is awful. Evolution or what? Couple of girls I know went down to that 2 years ago, reasonable value for money it seems.
| Sgian sucks mate, where are you based? The recent reviews definitely suggest UK!
| Knott- Yo dude. Glad you enjoyed it :) it really does depend - possibly Reconstruction Site or Left And Leaving, but Reunion Tour isn't bad. My favourite of theirs is actually Live @ Burton Cummings Theater but obv. that's not an LP. I would go for Reconstruction Site even though Left And Leaving is my favourite but if you liked his solo LP you should just get everything, even Fallow which is their worst but still brilliant.
| Sgian bro thanks for bringing FAK to my attention, just the kind of music I love and they're in G'gow next month so win-win!
| clercqie Nah it's ok, I'll wait 'till a link comes up then. Thanks anyways! :) That Franz Ferdinand rec on your review really got me interested though.
| clercqie You wouldn't happen to have a DL link for that Black Taxi album, would you? ;)
| DaveyBoy I had a read of the review when you posted it. You do know that folk is not my specialty.
| Tom93M DL-ing now. Looking forward to hearing it.
| Tom93M We'll see, eh? I've just picked up the new NME and they gave it an 8. We both know their scores have a tendancy to be on the overly-high side (Tribes, ahem!) but your score seems to correlate so this is one i'm defo gonna listen to soon (probs tomorrow). I'll report back, seeing as it seems this'll be one that Sputnik might overlook.
| Tom93M Haha, it would seem we do! It's quite good that we seem to cover similar albums but with different views, for balance and thattt.
| mallen- You're allowed to post reviews that you've posted elsewhere on the site and I'd say the workload is about 3-4 reviews a month. This is the site: http://thealtreview.net/
| Fugue Cheers for the link. I've just finished my first playthrough and it's different to what I was expecting, and I can definitely feel the TLF vibe. It'll probably take a few plays to sink in, but I can see myself giving it a 3.5 or maybe even a 4 right now, Unknow and Forever I've Known are the only tracks that have stuck with me so far.
| Fugue I haven't heard it yet actually Ali, I've looked but all of my regular places only link me tod file locations. I'm not going to pay for it because my brother will probably be buying it so I could always rip it off him sometime. I'm very interested though, do you know if it's streaming anywhere?
| mallen- Are you interested in writing for another music site?
| DaveyBoy Nah, Sowing dibbed it before I even knew it was coming.
| robin yeah i'm reviewing it when i feel the energy to rip the s*** out of one of my oldest musical heroes haha
| Dreamflight ehehe, I guess that sounds pretty good. FECK DRING ARSE GIRLS! Oh man, classic tvshow really.
| Dreamflight lol. want me to add some xmas hat on good ol' father jack to mark the difference? :D
| Xenophanes Done and done. Not sure why I didn't like this until recently. I guess the vocals sort of turned me off, but I love the instrumentation. It's sort of twinkly and charming and stuff. And the vocals actually grew on me a lot
| Tyrael About the new Korn you said : 'This is just atrocious.' and then you rate it a 3? *confused*
| PorkchopExpress Hey, I saw your question in the ASAP Rocky review. Check out Kendrick Lamar's "Section .80". I reviewed it here, actually. It's my favorite hip-hop album of the year (in a year that has been really good for hip-hop) and possibly my AOTY. I like it that much. And if you haven't heard "Black Up" by Shabazz Palaces, that's another great one. But I can't stress "Section .80" enough.
| Knott- I most definitely have. I'll be reviewing it when I work out which ridiculously high rating it deserves.
| DaveyBoy I really gave it time to sink in. At the end of the day, I am admittedly a sucker for the overblown. Thats why Im looking forward to listening to new Florence as well.
| Sowing yeah I can, that is if I remember as well lol
| Sowing Well this round of promotions came as a complete surprise to everyone (not even I knew about it!), but I heard that the thread to apply for round 2 is going up on Monday. Might as well throw a line out there and see if you get a bite, right?
| Sowing hey I don't know if you are an aspiring contrib or anything, but I just wanted to let you know your good work as of late hasn't gone unnoticed. Keep it up, I hear they are having round 2 in January
| iFghtffyrdmns i know i know, I've ****ed around and let you down, etc.
| sehguh check out my mates band http://courts.bandcamp.com/album/no-knowledge-no-heart-ep sure youll like em
| lancebramsay Good rec's, pretty much downloaded every single one
| DaveyBoy You were right about me and Wild Beasts. Im Really struggling with them. Although I thought Two Dancers was pretty good.
| DaveyBoy On first listen, all your comments on The Subways are true. They are a critics nightmare really. Fun as, but can be picked apart on multiple levels.
| DaveyBoy I like that word catchy. Hehe. Kasabian is Kasabian. As divisive as ever. This one is a bit more melodic and a bit more Eastern sounding. But less energetic than all previous albums. Sort of more Beatles than Oasis. Some will like it more, some will hate it more.
| DaveyBoy God, you were quick on The Subways. Im gonna review it, but I have to get rid of Kasabian first. So its a step down huh?
| DaveyBoy Me too tbh. There can be no in between with me and indie sometimes. If I find it catchy, I like it. If I do not, then I wont. An example of the latter will be something like Deerhunter.
| sehguh I've had High Violet downloaded for a while, will listen to it tonight. thanks mate
| sehguh what National album should I start with?
| DaveyBoy Ur such a big softie. If I was to rate individual songs and then divide by 11 tracks, it would get a 3. But there is something very 2.5 about it.
| DaveyBoy 2.5 or 3. Although I thought it was a 2 on first listen. Theyre clearly trying something different, but its just so uncomfortable at times.
| DaveyBoy Hey Ali, just letting you know I am reviewing the new Hard Fi LP. Doesnt mean you cant as well, of course. What a strange beast it is.
| Knott- 761564-411681 head2head league for sputnik
| DaveyBoy A solid to strong 3.5 for Frankie. Really like the rock n roll vibe to it, with a little early 80s post-punk as well. Just needed that 1 track that floored me to get to a 4.
