| sixdegrees hard to say if that first Pinkshiny EP had an influence, but they were also early to the game and FWIW a lot of the current Russian/eastern european bands sound an awful lot like their early stuff

| sixdegrees yeah im not actually a huge fan but I think its hard to argue for a more influential band in the current wave, they hit that sweet spot between MBV/slowdive/the first starflyer album that the vast majority of bands in the 2010s are going for, when the genre was a lot more diverse before then.

 | GhostB1rd As for fracking as a short term solution, I think it's pretty clearly a good thing. You have to look at how much we've been able to leverage that to cut down on coal use, oil use, and dependency on unwelcome bedfellows in the Middle East. Having said that, yeah, there should absolutely be standards on how much they're allowed to impact local environmental conditions.

| GhostB1rd The thing about nuclear that is so advantageous is how insanely scalable it is, there are no restrictions as there would be with other "renewables". I don't think it's a winning strategy or long term sustainability to tell people to curb their energy use, especially in the developing world. We need to realize that use will keep climbing and adapt to that reality.

| GhostB1rd Yeah bb nuclear is the future. Fusion will eventually happen and then energy will be clean and cheap for everyone in the world. The problem is the tech venture to get there. Problem is nuclear got a really bad reputation after Chernobyl and Three Mile Island which are irrelevant to modern reactor structures and an impossibility given current systems.

| GhostB1rd Plus keep in mind that if government didn't guarantee loans and essentially allow schools to run wild with their budgets due to guaranteed influx of cash, the actual cost of getting a philosophy degree would go way down in the aggregate.

| GhostB1rd Yes to your question on loans. If you want philosophy your options if you didn't want that would be to dual-major, minor, or have it as an extracurricular hobby. There could also be humanities scholarships of course.

| GhostB1rd As to kicking out kids and not keeping everyone, that again is under current structure. If you change structure to allow universal school choice, you can change those rules too.

| GhostB1rd That assumes schools that are struggling won't adapt to keep students. They will. People always adapt. Also transport budgets for urban environments are pennies of the overall education budget so I think an overhaul of restructuring the education system could include covering that perceived gap in additional funds if necessary and actually problematic.

| GhostB1rd And my point about loans is that if actual real lenders have to be on the hook for loans, they will be way more cautious and this will create a drive to fields like STEM, medical, etc. where gainful employment is more likely and we have a dearth of talent. Imo it will right what is now a skewed system cause lenders have no liability as is the gubmint just covers it.

| GhostB1rd As to education reform, I'd argue you're far better off with Reps than Dems on that. Public teacherss don't seem to give a **** about the kids and school choice should be a right unless you're talking about higher education, in which case my preference would be to prohibit government backed student loans moving forward and allow students to discharge their loans in bankruptcy (which they cannot do under current law). Then let market for higher education actually play out.

| GhostB1rd Immigration I'm torn on. I want it to be easier to legally come here, especially for skilled immigrants, but also unskilled who just want a better life. Problem is when most of the current immigrants get here from Mexico they vote a certain way that works counter to the policies I want as a whole. Although Trump did surprisingly okay with especially south Texas Latinos.

They only seem to care about attacking Obamacare for political points rather than actually pushing for market reforms that would either increase the supply or reduce prices. I have no faith in them on that, despite the half-hearted attempts to reduce drug prices.
