  • AgainAnd Hey! How've you been? Is there a particular period or culture or such in history which interests you more than others? Also, I'm currently writing a thing on the brothers Tiberius and Gaius Gracchus. Are you familiar with them?

  • AgainAnd Sounds like quite the character! As for the Monkeys, I agree (as I find the lyrics the most endearing feature of the debut after three listens). Though I'm curious as to what's changed for you to speak of Turner's lyrical excellence in the past tense.

  • AgainAnd I'm listening to the Arctic Monkeys debut since a friend of mine recently praised it, and I'm trying to get into it. So far, it's good but nothing more than that. As for Fela Kuti, I must admit I know nothing about him. I'll try to fix that knowledge hole as soon as possible :)

  • AgainAnd Ah, history! When I was in elementary school, it was my biggest interest and I thought I was going to be a historian. Fast forwarding to today, I'm doing my last year of high school and tentatively planning on studying Linguistics (hopefully in the UK). As for my English, it's as good as it is because I've studied in English since 7th grade (so for five years now), and prior to that have maintained a great interest in both English and human language in general.

  • AgainAnd Yes, I suppose then it's a matter of no one else having it digged. And on your profile page the dig shows only the artist, the long version with the album only displays below your review comments (or so I understand). As for where I live, Vantaa which is a city in Finland adjacent to our capital Helsinki. Since you seem to be a university student (based on your mentions/links to the student paper), what is it you study?

  • AgainAnd For the digging (which you've figured out partially at least, as you have a dig attached to your profile), you need to go to an album's rating page (which can be accessed A) immediately upon clicking an album, if it has no review or B) when there's the review, above the chart on the right there's "User ratings", which you click). There's a dig-button on the rating page, and information about how many other people are digging the album at that moment.

  • AgainAnd I think that's a question to be answered by the review, which is up on Sputnik. Though in short, yes, I enjoyed it. As for the latest Tiger Mountain, I've had Back to Judy's Jungle stuck on repeat for three days now, and when not listening to it it's just as stuck in my head.

  • AgainAnd Agreed. I've now listened through Tiger Mountain thrice, but I'm not rating it yet since it still uncovers a lot with each new listen. Sounds good. On another note, I just finished a new review for Mali band Tamikrest's album "Chatma".

  • AgainAnd Regarding Eno's lyrics, a friend of mine who's a greater Eno buff than I am told me that his method of writing lyrics in the early records involved recording himself humming along to the songs, and then listening to those recordings until the humming resembled words, and then using whatever words they resembled as lyrics. If true, it would certainly explain their obscure nature.

  • AgainAnd I must confess I haven't heard that one (I've only managed to lay my hands on Here Come the Warm Jets, Another Green World, and Ambient 2). But with such a strong recommendation, I'll be sure to listen to it as the first chance presents itself. Thanks for the tip =)

  • AgainAnd So our outlooks to the two albums are nearly opposite! And as for Another Green World, it's one of my favourite albums (as my ratings attest to), as it seems to accomplish a remarkable synthesis of instrumental/ambient and pop when looked at as a whole, where Bowie resorts to a somewhat artificial division to separate halves.

  • AgainAnd Ah, for whatever reason to change ratings you need to go to a review of the album, and where there's the graph to the right with the spread of ratings for the release and so-on, you have an option to change your rating. As for my low score for Lust For Life, I actually only heard it for the first time yesterday (Shocking, I know), and it's based on just one listen as background music. I have no doubts the score will change upon more numerous, as well as more focused, listens.

  • AgainAnd Yes, So What is a beauty! One of my very favourite pieces of music. Seeing your ratings for Bowie above the shoutbox, I'm compelled to say that I prefer Low to "Heroes". While they stand neck-and-neck for the A-side, Low's ambient half beats that of "Heroes". Sense of Doubt, for example, feels skeletal and blueprint-like in its contrast of the gloomy piano and the optimistic synth. What are your thoughts? Why "Heroes"?

  • AgainAnd That's a very good thing, being able to fall in love over time as opposed to out of it. In my case, I've too often fallen prey to the opposite, while one of the most significant instances for me in growing fond of an album over time happens to be BoB. As for another thing, I'm curious as to the non-inclusion of Kind of Blue on your album ratings, seeing as other Davis albums have been listed by you.

  • ChloeDoe I only own Aja, Can't Buy a Thrill
    September 25 06:22 PM
  • ChloeDoe I can agree that his causes are relatable, and he does make some acute observations. For me though, that wasn't enough to warrant a higher rating. No problem, thanks for asking. It's been interesting to discuss. Seeing as you listen to jazz, rock and Americana, do you perchance listen to Steely Dan? :)

  • AgainAnd Ah, the oft-maligned critical faculties. As a point of interest, how often do you generally change your opinions of albums over time, and by how much?
    September 24 02:40 PM
  • ChloeDoe Hello :) Yeah, about "Whatever People Say I Am...", I found it a little school-boy angry and rather repetitive, and I'm rather biased personally as I just can't stand Turner's voice. Never really understood the hype about 'em, and I didn't find it all that innovative at the time. Feel free to let me know why I'm wrong on this haha.

  • AgainAnd Thanks for sharing that review. It's excellently written, albeit it seems to lean more towards describing the music and exploring its themes, than pass judgement on it. In particular, it mentions none of the flaws that you just told me. As such, the term "tribute" as appears on the site seems more apt than to call it a review.

  • thinbrownduke Hey buddy. I had really wanted to review 'The Nightfly', but it's been done (superbly), so I might do 'Harry' (Harry Nilsson, 1969); a couple of Professor Longhair reviews; Paul Simon's debut; Supertramp's 'Crisis? What Crisis?'; and some other ones that haven't yet been done on the site.I know, it's a controversial decision. I do love 'Blonde on Blonde'; here's a review I did of it for my Uni paper a couple of years ago - http://www.tcs.cam.ac.uk/issue/music/a-tribute-to-bob-dylan/

  • AgainAnd Hey dude! Are you planning your next review? And as good as Another Self Portrait is, how do you prefer it over Blonde On Blonde? I'm curious as to what makes you like it significantly less than the albums before (BIABH and H61R) and after (JWH) it.
