  • Trifolium Cool! I think you can basically do whatever you feel like actually. Till now most of us have told why we love the album so much and what the similarities or differences were between the two. Something like that? But it's all up to you! Looking forward to it!

  • Trifolium Hi Nihilist! Next week is your Year Of Jazz entry! Are you still up for it? Participation has dropped a little bit but perhaps we can rekindle the flame!

  • Get Low is incorrect. I also have an English degree, so grammar is something that I find interesting anyway.
    March 20 10:50 PM
  • Get Low I highly recommend going to Barnes and Noble or whatever bookstore is near you, and finding some basic grammar rule books. There's a lot of them that are accessibly written for people who just want to refresh their brain or the rules, or for people who just flat out suck at grammar (not saying that's you, I'm just saying). You can also study up on different grammar rules on the internet. I always look stuff up on grammar as I'm writing if I even have the slightest inkling that what I'm writing

  • Gnocchi Hey dude, wanna clear up the Eyehategod comments. i wasn't tying to be snotty - I just think it would be more beneficial to find reviewers for those "less popular genres" than pulling the guys that already have niches. I do agree that reviewers should branch out from what they're used to.

  • DDDeftoneDDD Well, the name afaic is Portuguese guitar and its used in fado. The name in portuguese is Guitarra Portuguesa, which is actually Paredes' first album XD hug

  • DDDeftoneDDD I'll check that fella!

    March 14 06:31 PM
  • DDDeftoneDDD s*** I'm so happy. Which one you re on? Movimento perpetuo has some dark folk (new term I know) influences on the last tracks and damn if I don t feel the celtic connection.
    March 14 06:15 PM
  • Divaman I appreciate it. When we spoke a few weeks ago, and you explained you hadn't meant anything by it, I was good with that, but I think I wasn't clear that I wasn't encouraging further posts along those lines. Sorry if I wasn't clearer.
    March 4 11:19 PM
  • Divaman Dude, totally inappropriate. You need a new theme.
    March 4 09:59 PM
  • ArsMoriendi I certainly feel like this is true. It started to happen around 2017. The Casual Conversation threads started by JustJoe helped a lot. They attracted a lot of cool people.
    February 27 10:34 PM
  • ArsMoriendi It used to be pretty frequent (2014-2016), but it's actually fairly rare now.
    February 27 09:38 PM
  • evilford But after that I can tell u that I'll probably be checking the rest of their discog, good stuff
    February 20 07:05 AM
  • evilford Sweet, I might do that! Honestly I think the first three tracks were standouts for me but it was all really solid. Looks like it's labeled by the site as "metalcore" but it definitely sounded like it had more balls than pretty much all the metal core I've heard thus far.
    February 20 07:04 AM
  • evilford Dude croatoan rips. Not having a problem at all with the vox. The cleans are ok, definitely not the worst thing I've ever heard but the harsh vox remind me a lot of thou which is no problem at all
    February 20 02:01 AM
  • evilford Nice thanks for the rec! Still gotta check starkweather too, will do that tonight or tomorrow

  • porcupinetheater I'ma ditto what Trif just said in the Shoutbox right under! I really appreciate the rec, Mate, stoked as Hell to check it! (Once I wrap all this nutzo midterms work and can take the time to focus on tunes again instead of just jamming drony things for focus)
    February 19 07:29 PM
  • Trifolium Oh and also!!! I see now why I recognised the name earlier. I have known the Officium release I just rated for ages, a super lovely disc. Going to check more of his stuff because he's super cool!
    February 19 06:44 PM
  • Trifolium Dude I LOVE it! So free and elegant and pulsating and breathing and, as always with free jazz, organic! Yeah this is superb. Thanks for pushing your rec everywhere haha!

  • Lord(e)Po)))ts Oh yeah, absolutely. I've had a complete paradigm shift over the course of the decade. Leading up to 2010 I had pretty much just started acknowledging that genres outside of metal even existed, and would have been particularly appalled at the notion that 10 years from then I would be listening to so much Electronic and virtually no metal at all anymore lol.
    March 27 06:06 AM

  • Crysis I have the promo so I will be reviewing the entire thing soon.
    February 19 03:34 PM
  • Metalstyles I actually have, both their newest (the name escapes me at the moment) and Decipher vol. 2. Unfortunately, it never really clicked with me, which is weird because I know, characteristically, it should absolutely be up my alley. I found that project to be lacking an edge, for me personally. The new album especially started out like it was going to be a masterpiece, but along the way I kinda lost interest for it. Thanks for the rec though, I appreciate it!
    May 8 02:42 PM
  • Pennywise_M hmm i see. Yeah you know, i actually NEVER had an alt so it's still quite funny you'd say that haha. Haha alright mate, cheers then c:

  • Pennywise_M ... You serious? Mate, i've been pretty much off the site for half a year, i never had an alt. Wait what people think i've been alting all this time? HAHAHA omg this is priceless.

  • Pennywise_M uhh someone just linked me to your account. Would love to hear the reasoning behind your awesome reviewing name haha
    April 23 10:03 PM
  • organizedsound If you're interested I'm German literature, I recommend Georg Buchner if you haven't read his work already. He's only 19th century, but the qualities of his writing really place him alongside many of the early modernists as well as 20th century avant-garde playwrights such as Ionesco. Incredibly ahead of his time in both content and style. I'd recommend his novella, Lenz, or any of his plays. Fantastic writer.
    December 13 03:34 PM
  • organizedsound I have to read an obscene amount of stuff for college, so getting around to the authors I'm interested in has been a slow process. That being said, my current favorites and recent interests include Proust(he alone is preventing me from reading everything else I want to), Flaubert, Chekhov, Anne Carson, Pirandello, Artaud, William Carlos Williams, some of the "language" poets such as Armantrout and Hejinian, etc
    December 13 03:26 PM
  • organizedsound Looks like I'll start with Invisible Cities. And most of the authors you listed after your description of Calvino are authors I've been meaning to read. I can't say I'm familiar with most of the Germans you listed. It seems that while we have similar dispositions to literature, you're far more experienced than I.
    December 13 03:17 PM
  • organizedsound It's also refreshing to see a sputniker who's into writers like Barthes and Calvino. I normally avoid sputnik-literature threads because of the typical Hemingway/Orwell/Vonnegut/Easton-Ellis monotony. What other literature are you interested in, generally?
    December 13 04:38 AM
  • organizedsound organizedsound Hey! Calvino's work has been recommended to me several times before, but I've unfortunately yet to read any. I picked up a copy of "If on a Winter's Night a Traveler," but it continues to sit on my shelf while I plow through other books. Would that be a good entryway into his work, or do you have any other recommendations?

  • Jots It's all good man, even staffers have room to improve. A good thing to keep in mind (if you plan on reviewing regularly, idk) is that you can't please everyone. I'm a big fan of conversational/personal reviews (I take it you aren't as much). All you can do is develop a style you like and try to use whatever criticism you get to your benefit.

  • Voivod Hey man, saw your review for this year's Godflesh EP and it would be great if you included the EP stream link - http://godflesh1.bandcamp.com/album/decline-and-fall-ep - in your introductory post.

  • Metalstyles I think it has the most effective cleans on the album and I do like that track a lot, but I don't think it's quite the Mechina formula perfected, or however you described it. It's a great track, but not my most favorite from Xenon, probably like 3rd or so. My favorite track from Mechina in general has to be Terminus, which is just an epic song. If they could do a song like that on the next album, only make it a just a little more varied, then that would be the Mechina formula perfected for me.
    January 7 10:39 PM
  • demigod! hell yeah, thanks a bunch man. and that message board seems pretty cool... too bad it also seems pretty dead

  • Relinquished it started when I caught the video for rational gaze on HB on MTV sometime when I was 12/13 sometime after Nothing was released if I remember correctly. and as for theory I can't really help you out; I learned through textbooks from high school/college and what's left are years of notes and memory, I don't remember any titles sorry.
    December 9 08:21 PM
  • demigod! yeah that does sound a tad bit cheap or even gimmicky, but hey it's Integrity so I'm sure whatever it is it'll end up being good. they'll probably end up having a great time together and creating some awesome music. Especially with that beast of a line-up.
    November 15 01:51 AM
  • demigod! yeah I recently heard something about them releasing a new 7" record, I'm stoked for it. is there any word on when it will be released to us starving fans?
    November 15 01:29 AM
  • demigod! so how'd you manage to get a copy of the systems overload remaster anywho?
    November 13 05:30 PM
  • demigod! cheers man. i'll have to take a look for em. those 4 songs are among my faves by Integrity now. also gotta find that EP they released earlier this, but my luck has not been great so far
    November 2 09:39 AM
  • demigod! yo, youre a big Integrity fan. so I downloaded Those Who Fear Tomorrow a while ago to put it on my new laptop and it came with a bunch of bonus tracks, no idea what era their from but judging by the vox it sounds like early. the tracks are called Kingdom of Heaven, Rebirth, Eighteen and Evacuate (this one with a * next to it for some reason). anyways, they all kick ass but are they like from an EP that I missed out on or something? let me know
    October 31 11:33 PM
  • porch can't really comment on what makes a bunch of albums good without knowing which ones you're referring to, and there's plenty of 'punk classics' i dont care for. one of the coolest things about punk especially in the timeframe you're talking about is that it had all sorts of unique bands/scenes and ****ups on the fringes with nothing tying them together other than being against the grain and pursuing their own vision.

    August 20 12:30 AM
  • TrueBlood Hey thanks for that feedback bro, I appreciate it! Hmm maybe I can lower the drums a bit. Do you feel it's the overall drum sound or just certain components of it such as the snare or kicks? Also I haven't heard of "Integ", what's the full band or album name so I can check it out? Thanks again
    August 13 04:38 PM

    July 19 01:24 AM
  • JamieTwort My first proper blues album was actually Gary Moore's Still Got the Blues. I'd heard about Moore from his time with Thin Lizzy and decided to check out his solo stuff and it was actually his blues material that grabbed me the most.
    July 13 11:25 AM
  • JamieTwort No I don't play any instruments actually. I started learning guitar at one point but then sort of got side tracked and didn't really pursue it. I first became interested in the blues through hard rock bands like Led Zeppelin who were obviously heavily influenced by early blues artists.
    July 13 11:24 AM
  • pribosse so i heard you like jazz and death metal, this is neither: http://necrodogg.bandcamp.com/album/spontaneous-combustion
    July 13 02:11 AM
  • bloc Perhaps you're right about the speed, if you are strictly speaking about the tempo of a song. However, I feel like there are some technical dm bands that sound as if they're trying to squeeze as many notes in a bar as possible. And to be honest, that's never going to sound pleasant. And don't sweat the timing, the conversation ain't going nowhere.
    July 13 12:03 AM
  • bloc You're absolutely right about Sputnik. There's a bit of a hive mind mentality around here that I've come to just ignore. I'm not going to let some average rating of 4.2 tell me what to think. In my mind, it's simply about what sounds good. Nothing more. I don't care if the band is doing something no one has ever done, or they're doing something a 1000 bands are doing. If it sounds good to me, that's all I need.
    July 12 11:57 PM
  • bloc In the future, while pop will become more and more synthesized, I see some (not all) metal becoming faster and faster, specifically those branches of metal where the playing style demands it. Either this will shun away the more "old school" listeners like you and I, or it will attract a new generation of users. Either way, I believe that there will still be those bands that know when to slow it down and how to craft a song properly.
    July 8 09:22 PM
  • bloc But to answer your question, I think fast playing is always going to be a "metal" thing, you know? I highly doubt the next generation of rock bands (or any non metal band) are going to be playing at super speeds. And even still, you take a band like Dance Gavin Dance which kind of do "shred" at times, they still understand how to write a song that flows and not overdo the shred thing.
    July 8 09:19 PM
  • bloc Haha, don't worry about the length. It's not too often I have this deep a conversation with a Sputniker. Regarding today's tech death, it's really gone downhill. Yet I am not sure if these bands have suddenly forgot how to put together a song properly or the whole novelty of "omg these guys play really fast and all over the place" has really worn off.
    July 8 09:15 PM
  • JamieTwort If you're interested in listening to Gary Moore check out his album Still Got the Blues. You might also want to listen to the album Blues for Greeny which is Moore's tribute to Peter Green.
    July 8 09:15 PM
  • JamieTwort I think the main reason I like him so much is due to his ability to convey emotion through his playing. In my opinion he does that better than any other guitarist. For me emotion and feeling are the first things I look for in guitar playing, especially when it comes to blues. I'd say that the most obvious modern equivalent (although not really that modern) would be Gary Moore. Moore also plays with a lot of emotion and has named Green as his main influence. Thanks, glad you enjoyed the review.
    July 8 08:23 PM
  • bloc From what I see around here, I wouldn't say the word is overused though. I think the average musical listener knows that technical is the word used to describe a band or musician who is very knowledgeable about their instrument and/or freely shows off this knowledge in their music.
    July 7 01:10 AM
  • bloc These days, if you play metal you almost have to be a lightning fast player to stand out. But ironically, everyone does it now so it has become less and less impressive to see an entire band play at light speed. Speaking of Death, the one album I feel that does not have a big impact on me is their last one. That is a great example of where becoming slightly more progressive and "tech" has kind of turned me off from an otherwise fantastic band.
    July 7 01:05 AM
  • bloc Funnily enough, I consider myself more of an Obscura/Necrophagist fan more than a Hyprocrisy fan. It might have to do with what I heard first. I remember when Obscura's Cosmogenesis came out and I was blown away by how technical it was, yet it sounded really good. But even though that was in 2009, I haven't even thought about the band or album in the past 2 or 3 years tbh.
    July 7 01:01 AM
  • bloc These are very general guidelines for me though, and it all depends on the style of music of course, as some songs may not even have a chorus. In all honesty, it is quite difficult for me to describe my thinking process when listening to and rating music.
    July 6 11:00 PM
  • bloc As you said, it is much more about how a song flows and how well the individual parts are put together. Using a typical metal or rock song as an example, I always listen for the chorus first before anything, as that is the focal point of any song. If I don't like it, it's unlikely I will enjoy the rest of the song and therefore, the song gets a low score from me.
    July 6 10:59 PM
  • bloc Hmm, good question. Perhaps 3 or 4 years ago, I valued technicality quite a bit, especially in metal. Therefore, I liked hearing a lot of change in a single song, spider-y riffs, and flashy guitar solos, etc. However, now it doesn't mean much. It seems as though every band and their mother is technical nowadays so it's now to the point where being technical simply isn't enough to make me listen to an album more than once.
    July 6 10:55 PM
  • Wizard And props for knowing who the **** Vangelis is. Blade Runner is the greatest movie ever made, PERIOD!
    June 4 10:40 PM
  • Wizard Thanks dude, very thoughful of you ; ).
    June 4 10:39 PM
  • Willie The biggest tip is to remember that it's just a website and not to take anything personal or get emotional(i.e. pissed off) about anything because there's no point. Treat it like a baby sitting job. Make sure no one does anything catastrophic and remember that you can take a break whenever it's needed.
    June 1 02:43 PM
  • ViperAces thanks bro, will check them out. are you an alt btw?
    May 25 10:28 PM
  • ViperAces does it have anything to do with integrity? or did you just randomly recd it to me?btw are you familiar with other great integrity albums? all i have is their debut, humanity and the last two
    May 25 02:39 PM
  • ViperAces what genre is it?
    May 25 07:36 AM
  • ViperAces thanks bro, but i dont get it, was it released in2003?
    May 24 10:51 PM
  • Wizard Sounds good, thanks for the rec.
    May 19 11:05 PM
  • Hyperion1001 dont buy the compilation that necroharmonic put out a few years ago. my friend has the CD and the sound is terrible. roy wonders why people hate on his label. as far as downloading it goes, i can upload my copy of denial for you, but thats the only thing i have as a file right now.
    May 6 09:01 PM
  • ShadowRemains Can't really find anything that hasn't been taken down, you might be better off just searching for the individual demos, apparently this compilation has a problem with the sound quality anyways.
    April 27 08:12 PM
  • Crucifucxxx You're a douche, chi cheng kicks your ass
    April 15 11:08 AM
  • liledman Check this out: http://youtu.be/eKBYWeOJUHw What is really nice about this is that there are all those intriguing elements at play, though it is far more digestible than a Taylor improv or the like. I think it's always a gradual change in taste when it comes to breaking really far out of tonality, but once it starts (appreciating Howard for instance) it probably won't stop ;)
    April 14 03:45 AM
  • liledman Well it doesn't matter what kind of music it is, composed or improvised, comfortable or avant-garde, there are things that I always look for: interesting textures, interesting rhythms, melodies, harmonies, etc. Taylor is pretty full on, though he does have a great sense of development and form in his crazy improvisational style. Maybe if you listened to some more atonal music and got more familiar with the amount and kinds of dissonance used it could make it easier?
