Review Summary: Lack of originality, lack of great lyrics. Yet, not unbearable. In fact, you may just find yourself unknowingly humming those catchy choruses.
Matt Breen has a fairly good voice in my opinion, he isn't as whiney as alot of vocalists in the same genre. He holds a good scream, which to their advantage they use very well. But, I just didn't find anything new or original about this album. It's just your average post hardcore album , but often you'll find those other ones with far more defining lyrics. "She presses her lips to the bottle of cola, I see the kiss and it turns me on." You could get deeper things from a 13 year old. But, it does pick up from that point.
Buy American Machines - This song is extremely repetative and gets just annoying half way through. Which is kind of sad considering it goes only for 2 minutes and 13 seconds. But thankfully or not it is the shortest song on the album by over a minute. So, they can hold a beat.
Make Tonight - This is where the album goes (even more) downhill lyrics wise. Let's be honest, if you're going to make the lyrics about a subject as undefining as sex, you may as well make them good. Besides that, this is overall a good song. One of my favourites from this record even. With a chorus that you may find yourself singing along to on a few occasions, it is not nearly as bad as some things that I have heard.
Breathe Underwater is catchy as hell and despite containing the word 'effervescent' doesn't have bad lyrics. This song is indeed the highlight of the album. Even though, it's nothing original, what they've done, they've actually done quite well. They close the album with a track much like Breathe Underwater. Dislocated may indeed have the best lyrics from the whole album. But, they're still far from perfection. And then they go and ruin it all, with a feel-sorry-for-me scream of "Dislocated, watching myself die.".
