Review Summary: Catchy enough for the closed minded and deep enough for those who want to look.
Well, its been out for a wee while now, and i guess although i haven't fully explored it, i know enough about it to give a reasonably fair score and review.
Well, i may as well jump right in and cut any BS.
Overall this album is well worth the price you will pay for it in any high street. When compared with other Tool albums, it certainly seems technically as good as any of them if not better and in terms of the depth of previous Tool albums it will keep you looking for hidden messages and repeating patterns more certainly than Aenima or any other before it, although i feel it is a little more straight forward than the mighty Lateralus was.
The general style is in my opinion more laid back than any Tool album before it. That being said the more reserved phases in the album are used to instill a great sense of atmosphere which contributes to a profound sadness within the album which is often followed or offset with a burst of emotion (usually anger or frustration).
While i would not want to just give up the meaning, i will say that Maynard develops around themes previously developed in Lateralus as well as a very prominant A Perfect Circle influence on the album and while even if you didn't scratch the surface of this album, it would be an excellent listen - but for those who are willing to look, to those who are open minded and to those who seek to find a little more than a catchy tune for the drive to work you will find hidden meanings, complex themes and great music....as well as a cool sterioscopic lenses :D
I don't care whether you buy the CD or not, but if you do i hope you like it even half as much i do. And above all remember keep an open mind and see what this album is really trying to say because it will take the song to another level when you find out.
