Review Summary: "The Mayer" is in the building! Before you criticize, you make a better album.

I was just arguing with my best friend who said i can't justifiably call "continuum" a classic because it just came out. I beg to differ. It's no secret that most artists' first album is their best work. This is John's 3rd studio effort! Not to mention his 2 live albums "Any given Thursday" and "Try". Can i justifiably call this album a classic? Absolutely. I took an early lunch yesterday at work to go get the album and on the way back i was astonished at what i was hearing. I never heard music from someone that was so different from anything that they have ever done before, but at the same time still exactly what you expect to hear from them at that point in time. This is one of those rare times when an artist comes out with something new and we're not like "Its ok but i expected better". As a performer John has earned his stripes headlining, touring, and selling out venues across the country. And as a guitarist? Forget about it, sharing the stage with guitar greats including Eric Clapton and Buddy Guy. Continuum has the perfect blend of guitar, melody, and profoundly written lyrics that John has had from the start. I'm sure guitar players like myself also appreciate the new warm tone he seems to be experimenting with. To me the album is perfect, however i can respect the opinion of some if this effort is a little bit too mellow for them. Hey, you like what you like. I love sitting in a dark room listening to a record that can change my mood and paint a beautiful sad, if not to say the least, melancholy picture as 'gravity' and 'slow dancing in a burning room' do. My favorite right now? "the heart of life'. Wow! Where did this catchy brilliant piece of art and over-dubbed guitar work come from? Only from one person. "The Mayer" of course (i dubbed him that myself. use it if you want.). I can see without a doubt that this album is a classic. When people are listening to it 20 years from now, and guitar students are practicing John's brilliant riffs and chords laced with tricky palm mutes and major 2nd notes, you will too if you haven't already.

Album Rating: 3.5 | Sound Off

Welcome to the reviewing world. You write well and there is nothing particularly wrong with the length of your review, but I feel that you should justify your rating a bit more. You don't really go into any detail about the quality and sound of the songs on the album. I think if you dedicated a paragraph or two to justifying how these songs merit a "classic" rating you'd be in a better position. This Message Edited On 09.15.06

Most artists first albums are n ot usually their best...look at Zeppelin, The Beatles, The Stones, Pink Floyd, Rush, and countless other bands. Maybe if your talking about one hit wonder bands that are the norm these days.
