I'm very wary to check this out. Heard about 20 seconds of The Fruits of Conquest on a podcast and literally cringed so hard I thought my face was having some sort of muscle spasm. Can I assume if I didn't like that I'm not going to like the rest of this?

I understand that the first listen to the album might disappoint long-time fans of the band. But it would be a mistake to stop after just one listen and dismiss it because of the use of autotune (the most common negative criticism). On this album, they try many new things, with some real successes, like "Liar’s Remorse," for example. The autotune, which is disappointing at first, actually starts to feel quite natural after two or three listens. Of course, this album isn’t the high point of The Strokes’ career, but it’s certainly not an all-time low. It’s probably when they stray the farthest from their usual style that they are most interesting on this album; it asks a little effort from old fans, but it’s worth it.

The autotune is genuinely baffling and does detract from the songs it's on -- but there are some real highlights here like Dine N'Dash, The Fruits Of Conquest and Tyrants of the Mellow Moon
Wish Julian would've kept his adoration for autotune reserved for The Voidz but it is what it is

Agree that this isnt as bad as expected or made up to be but the autotune really holds this back. Only song with autotune here i can stand is Lonely in The Future because the vocal melody is so catchy
Other than that Dine N Dash and Going to Babble On is fairly ok songs

I am not personally a fan of the autotune but I agree with the reviewer's assertion about creative freedom and the power of an artist remaining true to their vision even when it subverts expectations. The songs here mark a drop off from The New Abnormal to be certain, but this is not abysmal.

Maybe they put this out just to mess with music critics (one in particular obviously) but even still most of the album didn’t need to be autotuned to such a gratuitous extent. There was autotune on the last album sure but it was used with appropriate restraint, this just sounds like 808s and Heartbreak but 20 years later
