Review Summary: A stronger and more refined follow-up, but not quite a classic!

Released in 2000, Stronger Than Death finds Black Label Society continuing directly down the path established by Sonic Brew. The foundations remain the same: heavy southern grooves, stoner influences, thick riffs and the unmistakable guitar work of Zakk Wylde. However, this second effort feels more focused, less raw and considerably more refined. Just as importantly, it avoids the excessive length of its predecessor, resulting in a more concise and balanced listening experience.

The album starts strongly with All for You before reaching one of its highest peaks with Phony Smiles & Fake Hellos, an outstanding track driven by groove, memorable hooks and a distinctly stoner flavor. 13 Years of Grief follows with a darker and heavier atmosphere, elevated by one of the album's most impressive guitar solos. Later, Counterfeit God delivers another hypnotic riff and further proof of Wylde's exceptional lead playing, while Love Reign Down stands out thanks to its stoner inspired opening and effective tempo changes. These songs represent the album at its best and showcase the strengths that would define Black Label Society for years to come.

Yet despite its many virtues, Stronger Than Death never quite reaches the level of a truly great album. The guitar work is consistently excellent and there are flashes of genuine brilliance scattered throughout the record, but outside of a handful of standout tracks, memorable moments are surprisingly scarce. The quieter songs such as Rust and Just Killing Time add variety but fail to leave a lasting impression, and much of the material sits comfortably in the "good" category without ever becoming exceptional.

Conclusion: Stronger Than Death improves on Sonic Brew in almost every technical aspect. It is tighter, more coherent and easier to revisit. What it lacks, however, is that extra spark that transforms a very good album into an essential one. There are glimpses of greatness here, but not quite enough of them.

Best Tracks: Phony Smiles & Fake Hellos, Counterfeit God, 13 Years of Grief, Love Reign Down

Agreed most of the album is in the 3.0 range. "Counterfeit God" is an absolute banger still and for that reason, I 3.5.

I could agree with you that the album is closer to a 3.5 than a 3. However, my philosophy when it comes to rating albums is not to give half points... it's either a 3 or a 4.

And if I have to choose, this is definitely more of a 3-star album than a 4-star one.

Listening to 1919 right now... Is not really better than this one.
