Review Summary: Here quietly lies Brotha Lynch’s magnum opus.
Everyone mostly knows the atheist cannibal from his debut album, Season of da Siccness. While his first two albums generally do what they do very well, they have their speed bumps. His skits are hit or miss. Even SodS ends with a pretty poor skit, and Loaded begins with a similarly bad one. On 24 Deep, everything he touches just works, and is his best flowing from his early era.
Honestly, going from his first two albums to this is a surprise. The amount of variety on here is impressive, along with how well Lynch executes everything. For one, there’s a few tracks on here that remind me of early Viper, but better. Had 2 Gat Ya and Walkin’ 2 My Funeral have these low fi, cheap beats, and feels quite uplifting compared to Lynch’s grim bars. His lyricism is mostly focused on his hood life, but has the foundations of his over the top horrorcore he would become known for.
His rapping is rhythmic, but not quite to the chopper style on his debut. And these bars are completely top shelf. Walkin 2 My Funeral is him talking about him getting shot 6 times in the chest, and walking to his funeral on nerve shock alone. Now that's some tough shit. Even the songs with less interesting backdrops are held by how well done his rapping and bars are, like Lose a Hoe, Gain a Hoe.
As for the production, it’s quite interesting. Sometimes the beat is right up with his vocals, which gives the more lo-fi beats a cloud rap edge. There’s times when it takes a backseat for whatever ideas Lynch has otherwise, like in Back Fade. Even when the beat isn't that cheap, it can still be up and front. Jackin’ 4 Joints feels aggressive with how in your face and short it is. It’s an interesting mixed bag that supports Lynch’s ideas and keeps the listener on their toes.
There’s a lot of ideas being juggled around on each song that it would waste time to talk about them all. His skits don’t go on for too long, and set up the character of Brotha Lynch well. If you want some excellent west coast hip hop to chow down on, this is where it's at. There’s g funk, horrorcore, and a healthy dose of creativity to keep everything flowing smooth.
Recommended Tracks: Walkin’ 2 My Funeral, Had 2 Gat Ya, 24 Deep, Jackin’ 4 Joints.
