Review Summary: The long road from 'PREfection' to perfection.

Finally a stone cold classic from McCombs and I was starting to worry he’d never deliver one. ‘Wit’s End’ showed sporadic genius and ‘Mangy Love’ was a lot more consistent, but on ‘Interior Live Oak’ all the pieces fit together seamlessly and effortlessly. The album shows his complete range to an even greater extent than the previous double set ‘Big Wheel…’, and better still these songs feel much more aligned, the product of the same tight band of musicians.

Two all time top ten McCombs song contenders arrive in the form of the subtly devastating lament ‘I Never Dream About Trains’ and the hushed profundity of ‘Missionary Bell’, but beyond those concise and perfectly formed cuts there are some excellent extended experiments like the enigmatic ‘A Girl Named Dogie’ and the blues rock ramble of the closing title track. Trademark light relief is provided by the tongue in cheek ‘Juvenile’ (‘Primus suck’) and the sprightly rocker ‘Asphodel’, a quality much needed on such a lengthy set.

Like most of his output this isn’t so immediate as a full listen, but over time the hooks sink deeper as you recognise themes and lyrics repeating, and you come to relax into the expert pacing. In summary, not only the best McCombs album so far, but surely one of the best traditional singer/songwriter albums of the decade.

First extended soundoff in a while, this album woke me up from a 'new music' slumber...quality new releases have been very thin on the ground the last two months.

Cheers zak, been given a day off by the missus to go to the gym and then watch the first day of the league so managed to squeeze out something for this. Already given it about seven listens!

Nice one Hawks bro!

Sowing - it took a while for him to become one of my current favourites, it wasn't instantaneous for me. This is definitely his most consistent so a good entry point....though if I had to pick a top 10 McCombs songs to get started with it would be something like:

1. County Line

2. I Went to the Hospital

3. Medusa's Outhouse

4. Hermit's Cave

5. Bum Bum Bum

6. I Never Dream About Trains

7. Unproud Warrior

8. Home on the Range

9. Missionary Bell

10. Memory's Stain

I'd also say if you're into Elliott Smith then songs like 'Missionary Bell' and 'Van Wyck Expressway' here are definitely in that sort of style. His album 'Dropping the Writ' is the most similar to Elliott taken as a whole.

Nice, thanks for the recs. I'll probably start here because I've always been a full album at a time guy. After that I'll definitely check out the Elliott Smith adjacent stuff because I'll probably enjoy it regardless of how I feel about this.

I'm confident there's a McCombs album for you...I'm just not sure which one that would be.

Hopefully this one ;)

Just think 'slow burner', I'd be surprised if anyone loved this entire album the first time through.

Listened to the first 2 songs already and he reminds me a bit of a lesser known artist I discovered earlier this year (Renny Conti...check his new album or at least "Looking at the Geese" when you get time). I'm digging it so far. Seems up my alley. I'll report back when I get a few full listens under my belt 🫡

Yeah, definitely one of his best, he's great when he just hits on something that seems so stripped back and easy but the song carries weight!

The only bad thing about 'Missionary Bell' in the context of this album is it's followed by the weakest song.

A few reviews saying 'I Never Dream About Trains' is 'Sinatra level' and I don't know about that, but that's also a great one imo

This is excellent. Really glad you reviewed it and brought it to my attention. Missionary Bell also stuck out to me on first spin, as did Trains. Van Wyck Expressway seems like it could become a favorite as well. Lots to unravel still but I'm easily feeling a 4.

Well, it's obviously a tribute and acknowledgement of that tune.

It's a style of song Cass has tried a few times before but I think he's perfected it for himself this time.

Sowing - a 4+ rating from anyone in this thread would make my day :D

Those are the three songs I thought would probably be your instant favourites.

'Home At Last' is the one I'm not sure how much I like yet, sort of his version of Nick Drake's 'Fruit Tree', self deprecating legacy stuff. Might switch places in my ranking with 'Diamonds in the Mine' which is great production but maybe just a pretty ditty.

'Home At Last' I keep imagining featuring on Beck's 'Mutations' album, has that feel, can hear him singing that one - is good.

'Diamonds in the Mine' is still a nice little deep cut, worst thing about it is it makes 'Strawberry Moon' straight after totally redundant.

Still loving this album.
