Review Summary: Cruising into the summer.
Causa Sui’s comeback last year was presented in the form of the focused
From the Source, offering an effective retrospective of their sound. Less than a year later, this contrasting and jam-based follow-up is, as expected, ready to become the soundtrack of this summer.
In Flux brings back the unpredictable factor in their compositions, as the band often wanders in various directions in a similar fashion to the Summer Sessions. Nevertheless, we are pampered once more by the lush melodies they effortlessly craft. From the Latino inspired rhythms of “Milkweed’s Pod”, steady grooves of “Boogie Lord’s Revenge” or the mellow leads on “Silver in the Gathering Light”, there is always a hook or beat ready to capture your attention. They have such a beautiful way of blending the guitar and bass over tight drum patterns and discreet synthesizer flourishes. It is no wonder the Danish quartet continues to amaze with the consistency and quality of the songs.
The jamming origins of these tunes are most evident in the two epics, “Moledo” & “Astral Shores”, where we can best witness how seamlessly all the build-ups flow and playful interludes unfold. You can hear traces of jazz, progressive rock and psychedelia fusing into dreamy odysseys. At times, they become more intense, however, on this record they decided to replace riffs with intertwining noodling and solos. The gorgeous coda of “Moledo” turned out one of their most charming moments so far. Then, “Spree” leaves the guitars behind, featuring a second keyboard to complement the lullaby-like notes, as the drum and bass gently play along. Perhaps one of the most relaxing releases in the genre as of late,
In Flux shows why Causa Sui remains at the core of contemporary psychedelic rock music.
