Review Summary: FREE LIL REESE

Chief Keef is the GOAT of drill music. We can just get that out of the way now. He burst onto the scene in the 2010s with his gritty street anthems mixed with horror synth-esque production making his tracks sound like Halloween theme music. Keef has evolved over the years, moving out of Chicago and into Los Angeles. While a lot of his contemporaries are either dead or in prison, Keef continues to excel and, most importantly, live. Almighty So was released right when he was taking off so it makes sense that it’s one of his best projects.

The most notable change with this tape as opposed to his previous offerings is the production. Up until this point he had been working almost exlusively with the likes of Young Chop and DJ Kenn, producers who thrive on bumping 808s and influences of all things horror. This time around there are a plethora of up and coming producers. The quality of the beats remain but Almight So mostly consists of drugged out cloud rap beats. Sosa’s flow follows suit as he sounds like he drank too much lean and was dozing off while recording. May sound unappealing, but it’s the entire charm of this tape. It feels like it was recorded in a trap house full of lean sippers and drug dealers.

Keef’s Chicago drill lyrical content mostly remains the same. Repping his gang, smoking fat doinks, toting his gun and letting the listener in on all the criminal activity he and his buddies are up to these (those) days. The Chief Keef of these days was still a young, reckless teenager deep in the street politics with the BDs. That’s what makes Almighty So so damn real. The authenticity of the recording has always been Keef’s strong suit. What he “lacks” in lyrical prowess, he makes up for with atmosphere and storytelling.

Almighty So is a unique gem in Chief Keef’s extensive catalogue. He has made magic in many other areas, but he only captured this exact druggy, hazy, smoked out atmosphere one time, and that was on this tape. This man has released many classic projects, but Almighty So stands with the elite of the elite in his discography.
