Review Summary: bleeeeaaaaauuggggghhh
I was really excited for this album. 2014’s
Easy Pain was Young Widows’ last release before an eleven year hiatus; a blistering blend of their raucous noise rock sound, with the fractal guitars and a
thicccccc bass tone augmented by just a tinge more atmosphere than their previous albums. I loved it, and in a post-Daughters world it served me well as a hearty helping of guilt-free road-rage noise rock.
Power Sucker is more of the same. And, let me tell you, it is exactly the same. The loud, meaty bass and guitars playing fractal hooks still compliment each other, the snare still *pops*, yet I just don’t give a sh
it. Something got lost in the eleven year hiatus: maybe the guys are too old for this sound, or maybe I am... maybe they should have tried something new, something more, or maybe any experimentation would still reek of old men playing an old game. It’s just
Rack, or
To All Trains, or
In Times New Roman, or any other uninspiring late-career rock album. Most every band releases a
Power Sucker—I’ll keep rating them between 2.5 and 3.5.
