Review Summary: Whispers from the cemetery gates.
There’s been an awesome trend in recent years of bands trying their hardest to create the most vile, worm infested death/doom metal on the face of this earth. Bands like Worm, Hooded Menace, Spectral Voice, Tzompantli, Fossilization, and yes, Hungarian masters Rothadas have been dropping bombs of death/doom so disgusting that you would think there was literal dirt and mud coming through your speakers. Rothadas released their debut in 2021 and while it didn’t get nearly the amount of praise that it should have, it was still a masterclass on how to make death/doom music. Its now 2025 and the boys are back.
Töviskert... a kisértés örök érzete.. Lidércharang is this duo’s second LP and they pick up right where they left off. Thunderous riffs rain down upon the listener sounding like a caveman wrestling with a woolly mammoth. Most bands can’t pull off an absolutely authentic replication of classic 90s death/doom a la Winter and My Dying Bride as the select few bands that I mentioned above and Rothadas are near the head of the pack. The vocals here are absolutely filthy. Sounding as if vocalist Lambert Lédeczy just swallowed an entire 5 gallon drum of tar, going from sick deep guttural growls to nasty pig sounding snarls and even some triumphant cleans at the end of the last track to tie it all together.
This kind of music isn’t unique because many bands play the same style, but where Rothadas succeeds so heavily is in the almost gothic atmosphere of the doom metal parts here. I mentioned My Dying Bride earlier because when these guys aren’t melting your face off with riffs, they’re surrounding you in a mist of atmosphere that will transport you to the darkest forest of your imagination. There’s no clean vocals or anything like that but man….those doomy parts really make me think of the magic surrounding the UK scene in the early 90s.
Töviskert... a kisértés örök érzete.. Lidércharang is an album full of soul crushing riffage, an insanely putrid vocal performance and an atmosphere that will have you shrouded in magic. Rothadas are a young band in this scene and they already have 2 semi-classics under their belts. When it comes to death/doom, most aren’t doing it better than these guys right now. This is 45 minutes of corpse fondling, down and dirty music right here. If you’re a fan of death metal or doom metal in the slightest, do not pass this up.
