Review Summary: "The day I learned your tune, I knew I'd never hum another"
Every now and then, an album sneaks up on you - or rather, hits you so hard it feels like it might just never leave. Not just as a collection of songs, but as a feeling, a space you didn’t really know you needed or wanted. *Burnout Days* by flipturn has been exactly that.
If a little over a month Hidden Mother’s Erosion / Evulsion felt like it was the right album at the right time for me, I guess now this is the one, and man is it hitting. Now, no one cares about my personal life and we’ll skip to the fact that things are just falling into place slowly, and it turns out the style of indie rock and the dreamy textures in Burnout days are the perfect recipe to just bask in for me these days.
Despite the emotional weight there is an effortlessly cool blend of shoegaze-adjacent indie that makes you want to drive nowhere in the middle of the night drowning in half-formed thoughts. The album opens with Juno, setting the tone with reverberating guitars and vocals that should sweep you off your feet and straight into motion. There isn’t a dull moment in here, Rodeo Clown somehow keeps the energy going all the way until the titular track which boasts one of the most striking vocal performances I've heard in a while - culminating in a stellar climax, much like everything else in here honestly.
flipturn dance between nostalgic catchy riffs and restless emotional energy, with performances that feel genuine rather than performative - you know?. *Burnout Days* doesn’t reinvent anything, but it doesn’t need to, it knows what it is: a pure emotional rush that captures recognizing the highs and lows of our struggles. If you’re currently dealing with colder weather and are in need of warmer day vibes, this might just be it.
