Review Summary: Here we go again...

Some bands just need to go away. Certain bands have (somehow) managed to put out decades worth of music while never pushing the limit of their sound or exploring any type of experimentation. And sometimes it works. Bands like Ulcerate and Immolation have had the same formula since their inception but still manage to find ways to keep their fans entertained by sheer atmosphere, brutality or both. Italy’s Fleshgod Apocalypse is not one of those bands. These guys have been around for nearly 2 decades and they have been terrible for their entire duration as a band. Their latest “offering” Opera is no different.

This band has always had the extremely annoying knack of combining synths and female vocals into their brand of technical death metal, and while that sounds cool on paper, it has continued to sound flat and uninspired from the get-go. Let's just start with the awful production job. Once again we have a Fleshgod album that sounds like it was recorded in a tin can. I know this is modern tech death, but I need some type of crushing atmosphere or tasty riffs if the production is going to be so squeaky clean (see the new Nile album). Opera is devoid of both. The synths and keys are so over the top bombastic that it doesn’t allow any of the other instruments to truly shine through and flourish. I’m all for synths in my metal, but for the love of all things holy, can we tone it down just a tad? The female vocals are annoying and somehow drowned out by the synths at the same time. The “riffage” is fast and technical for the sake of being fast and technical. There’s no variety, nothing catchy. It's just fast. And also super boring and not creative in any way. Congratulations guys, you can riff faster than any modern death metal band. You also blow. There’s no reason to even mention the growls because they’re so uninspired you barely even notice that they’re present in the first place.

Once again, Fleshgod Apocalypse has managed to produce an album that has zero redeeming qualities. Somehow I know that people are going to eat this album up because many metalheads nowadays need no substance. Guy is shredding? Let's mindlessly jam it over and over again!.... But I digress. The point is, Opera is just another boring, mind numbing ***show of an album from a band that has been making the same album over and over since the late 2000s…and they will never change. If that sounds appealing to you then by all means go for it. I’ve tried to like this band…but you can’t shine a turd my friends. Because it's still a turd.

This band has always lacked riffs in favor of atmosphere and overall grandiosity so I can certainly understand the points you are making in your review. The substance seems to come from a compositional standpoint rather than an instrumental approach if that makes sense, the addition of those synths and symphonic elements are where they choose to focus their efforts, and I can't fault you if that's just not your cup of tea especially when incorporated into tech death stuff which traditionally has mostly highlighted guitar and drum technicality.

I've seen them live a couple times and I found that space to really compliment their music the best rather than album recordings, which I still do enjoy because I can be a sucker for the highs of symphonic based music.

Pos'd regardless, enjoyed reading your thoughts!

That 100% makes sense bro. And thats my thing with this band. I have always loved synths in metal but these guys make it so hollow and boring imo. But I def see your points! Thanks for the pos my man! :]

An entertaining review indeed. At first I thought that the rating was very harsh. But then I listened to Morphine Waltz and it was a completely unpleasant listen. Too many elements thrown in, nothing can breathe, lack of melody and everything is just overwhelming. Maybe I am too old for that, who knows.

Huh. I agree this band is overall pretty meh, but I thought this was their best since their debut. Definitely not amazing or very forward-thinking, but also definitely not “irredeemable”. Solid 3/5.

Yeah I'm not going to go to bat for this band but this was fine. I remember bobbing my head a few times! But yeah the bad production is a little embarrassing at this point. I think the biggest problem is they have such a stranglehold in symphonic death metal, which is a neat microgenre, but nobody really does it. I'd definitely like them less if there was more competition out there.

I mean I love symphonic bm for the most part so you'd think this might do it for me but this shit just ain't it lol.

yeah this is one of those bands that I saw get pretty big but never really understood the appeal. Didn't know it was this bad though.

It's not that bad imo but some critique here does hold merit. They're sloppy for sure and the growls and production have always been mid. They just occasionally stumble into some songs that are pretty good imo. I think if they cleaned up some tracks from their post-mafia albums and made a compilation it'd be pretty good but they don't have that kind of quality control.

They've had worse. I can also adjust to bad production in most cases in a single song. idk I want to really like them but they can only get satisfactory at best. And I didn't dislike this, so yay for them? I've been chasing the high of Fist in Fetus ever since I heard them but nobody wants to pony up, including them.

I remember jamming Agony back in the day and having semi-high hopes for them, but they just fell off
