Review Summary: "He could've done a slightly better job if he had more time, but overall, it was a good, efficient butchering."
A lot of metalheads take themselves WAY too seriously if we’re being honest. Elitists will tell you you’re a pussy that hates real metal if you like an album that has keyboards or any type of breakdown. What happened to having a good time and banging your head? Fulci is a death metal band from Italy that has been gaining traction in recent years and their newest album
Duck Face Killings is just as unserious and goofy as the name suggests....but it also RULES.
One thing is evident right off the bat from the horror movie sample on opener Vile Butchery, Fulci enjoys making tongue-in-cheek music about murder, the undead and all the other things associated with horror-esque gimmicks…and I am here for it. As for the actual music? Yeah, that rips too. The riffs are undeniable and hard hitting. These guys border on slam with some HEAVY breakdowns but they never actually go full on slam. Mortician is obviously a heavy influence on this band, both in image and musically. Heavy hardcore influences are present as well, mainly in how the production is organized and the overall “sound” of the album itself. The vocals sound as if a 5000 year old zombie is defacating painfully after his long slumber. The drumming sounds like Satan playing wack-a-mole with the skulls of Osama Bin Laden and Hitler. We even get a few eerie ambient interludes, something they experimented with on previous albums as well and it definitely adds another layer to this already delicious piece of cake (death metal lmao). All of these elements make up one hell of a recipe.
Duck Face Killings is just a ripper of a good time boys. This isn’t a “thinking man’s metal” album. It's not gonna blow you away with its breakneck speed or its insane technicality. There’s none of that here. This is a silly, mid paced, riff heavy death metal album that you can enjoy with a few beers and a doobie. *** your “smart man’s metal”, I’ll stay on the carefree side of the spectrum with Fulci.
