I don’t know about you guys, but I love metal that sounds as if it came directly from the bottom of a filthy bog. The sludgey and dirty feeling that some bands manage to create really gets me going. Wharflurch is a death/doom/sludge band from Florida and they’re the newest example of what I like to call swamp metal.

***tier/Slimier could not be more perfect of a name for this particular album. Wharflurch seems to take a page out of their fellow statesmen Worm’s book, maximizing funeral doom riffs/atmosphere and mixing that with some of the most furious death metal you’ll hear this year. The difference is that these guys don’t tend to veer towards black metal at all and they really ramp it up in the sludge department, almost sounding like a dirtier and doomier version of Infester. The only thing this band seems to care about is how gnarly and nasty they can make their brand of death/doom. And in that they succeed with flying colors. The riffage hammers your anus relentlessly. The atmosphere is spot on and doesn’t get anymore authentically filthy than this.

Now that I’ve mentioned the word “authentic” it would be a good time to say that this band represents that word to the tee. They take the surroundings of their hometown and infuse it directly into their music. You wanna talk about swamp metal? Well this is it…and it doesn’t get much better. Prepare for the *** storm friends cause you’re about to be covered in it.
