Release Date: 1982 | Tracklist

Formed in the early 80s, Argentinian rock band Riff quickly established themselves as a leading force in the country's burgeoning heavy metal scene. Their third album, "Contenidos," released in 1982, built upon the foundation laid by their debut ("Ruedas de Metal) and the sophomore album "Macadam".

"Contenidos" showcases the band's musical chops and knack for crafting memorable hooksis a potent cocktail of driving riffs, soaring melodies, and provocative lyrics, which dive from serious political troubles, to sarcastic references about mundane topics.

The album explodes with a sound that's as raw as it is electrifying. Riff unleashes a torrent of driving riffs that churn and pulsate. Pappo's scorching guitar leads sear across the soundscape, and the rhythm section provides a rock-solid backbone, with drums that pound like a relentless heartbeat and bass lines that lock in tight, propelling the music forward.

But "Contenidos" isn't just about brute force. Catchy melodies weave through the heavier moments, creating sing-along choruses that burrow into your head and refuse to leave. Imagine raising your fist in the air, belting out a rebellious anthem, all while being swept away by the sheer energy of the music. That's the experience "Contenidos" delivers.

Tracks like "Mal Romance" ("Bad Romance) and "Susy Cadillac" are prime examples, with their pummeling drums and the guitar work creating a blizzard of sonic intensity. Another standout is "Pantalla del Mundo Nuevo" ("Screen of the New World"), a track that pulsates with a rebellious energy, its infectious chorus a call to arms against societal ills. The crown jewel of "Contenidos" might be "Maquinación" ("Machination"). Here, Riff's musical prowess is matched by Pappo's thought-provoking lyrics that delve into the manipulative forces that control society. The song's lyrics are as sharp as the band's performance, making "Maquinación" a truly powerful statement.

However, "Contenidos" isn't without its minor drawbacks. The raw, throaty vocals might not appeal to everyone, and a some of the songs, whilst not fillers, lack the level of impact the aforementioned highlights manage to achieve.

Despite these shortcomings, "Contenidos" remains a landmark album in Argentine rock history. Riff's strong musicianship, catchy riffs, and socially conscious lyrics shine through, making this album a must-listen for fans of classic hard rock with a South American edge. If you're looking for an album that's both head-bangingly heavy and lyrically stimulating, "Contenidos" deserves a place on your shelf.
