Review Summary: Conquering the musical world with just their second album.

It's not too often that a band manages to make two incredible albums in a single year, usually, there's a common case of a sophomore slump. But not Led Zeppelin, from the get-go these guys were absolutely legendary, and in 1969 they delivered a second album that managed to BETTER their already fairly good debut! This album is partly what laid the groundwork for Heavy Metal artists. It is even considered to be part of the Proto-Metal genre, and that makes sense with songs like "The Lemon Song" and "Heartbreaker" definitely providing the groundwork that bands such as Sabbath would follow. Overall though, it's mainly a Hard Rock album.

This album is nearly perfect from start to finish, with amazing psychedelia and unique chord progression, commonly drifting from light to heavy effortlessly as is the case on "What Is and What Should Never Be" which really highlights the flexibility of Jimmy Page's virtuoso playing, the psychedelic breakdown in "Whole Lotta Love", the utterly beautiful and brilliant relaxing vibe of "Thank You", and the vastly underrated simple yet fantastic hard rocker "Living Loving Woman". "Ramble On" is also on this album. Then you get to "Moby Dick" which is undoubtedly the GREATEST drum solo of all time, every time you hear it it's a treat to the ears, especially live. John Bonham could really deliver with his utter genius at drumming and John Paul Jones is someone I find who doesn't get enough credit; the basslines on this album are ferocious and really allow everyone to drive along flawlessly, he deserves much more recognition when people discuss this record.

The only weak spot is "Bring It On Home" which starts off with off-key vocals from Robert Plant and the instrumental is sloppy. It also is a blatant ripoff of multiple blues songs thrown together in a pastiche, rushed "song" that lacks in any sort of originality. Despite this, it's easily one of the greatest albums of all time, and worth a listen to anyone who enjoys good ol' rock 'n' roll.

Kinda surprised there isn’t more said about the plagiarism on this album, it’s not as pervasive as the debut but still quite a bit. I know Bring It On Home is mentioned but Whole Lotta Love and The Lemon Song are also essentially a bunch of blues songs cobbled together in similar fashion.

Excellent album though, I do agree it’s better than the debut but they are essentially two sides of the same coin.

This is an excellent album, very well balanced and without weak points.

It remains as one of mt favourite albums of the band.

“Led zeppelin stole music!” is such a limp, smooth brain take given that nobody has a problem with everyone from the Beastie Boys to Burial sampling and interpolating existing works to realise their own aesthetic vision. There are much more compelling ways to criticise Led Zeppelin both as musicians and as people.

I don't let artists being horrible people ruin the music for me, you can separate art from the artist and hate them as humans.

Letting artists actions and things they have done as people is dumb really, you'd end up hating half of music and its history if you let it affect you. I won't let it really

No thanks, I'll listen to horrible people all I want and enjoy the music and respect its impact on the development of music, history, and culture while hating the person behind it.

dude its 2024 and youre still harping on this? influence is a thing... i think you could make the argument that most 60s and 70s bands took a bit too much, but it doesnt really matter to me

Plagiarism? Zep? Yeah, they borrowed lyrics, so what? So did the blues artists they covered. And fact is, at this point, Zep is more ripped off than just about any other band in history. So whatever.

That said, I do think Zep II is the weakest of their first run of 6, and it's my least played at this point. Just not much on here I still want to listen to. What is And What Should Never Be is the exception--that's still fresh.
