Review Summary: The Case for This Album as Their Best
This is not meant to be an argumentative review. Just a fun idea I thought of to explain why in my opinion this is the best System of A Down album. I know most people say Toxicity and nothing in here is meant to downplay the LEGENDARY status of that album. But for me. This one takes the gold.
This album showcases System of A Down at their most creative. It may not bay as technically sound and the overall presentation isn’t as streamlined but in my eyes that’s what adds to it’s charm.
The thing that I love about this album is that it’s System at their most unhinged. There are more random transitions. Serj does more off the wall *** with his vocals. Darron surprises you at every turn. It’s downright chaotic at times. And also them at their most overtly socially conscious, while simultaneously retaining that vague abstract lyricism they would become known for. Sometimes downright silly “ I wanna *** my way to the garden cuz everyone needs a mother***er” Also containing my absolute favorite SOAD song. SUGAH! The main riff is so simplistic and yet effective. Serj is sounding like a lunatic of course, with off the wall lyrics ( My girl sometimes lashes out at me and I just ***in kick her and oooh babaay...SHE”S OOOHKAY!) but also containing some great transitions.
I love the feel of the album. The whole vibe. To me this is the essence of System of A Down, distilled to it’s purest form. No filler, no bull*** ( not that I’d describe anything they released as bull*** ) just full on alternative/chaotic/nu metal that’s creative, catchy, funny, thought provoking and unhinged. Perfect album
