Review Summary: "Nel mezzo del cammin di nostra vita / mi ritrovai per una selva oscura / ché la diritta via era smarrita" (Dante's Inferno).

Giovanni Sollima's album "Works" is a captivating exploration of musical diversity and virtuosity. From the moment the first notes resonate, listeners are drawn into a world where classical and contemporary elements are mixed, creating a tapestry of sound that is both rich and dynamic.

One of the most striking aspects of this album is the diverse array of instruments utilized throughout. Sollima's mastery shines as he effortlessly blends classical string instruments such as the cello and violin with more unconventional choices like electric guitar and experimental percussion. This fusion of sounds adds layers of texture and depth to each composition, allowing for a truly immersive listening experience.

In tracks like "La Spera Ottava", the haunting melody of the cello takes center stage, accompanied by subtle electronic elements that add a modern twist. The juxtaposition of traditional and contemporary instrumentation creates a sense of intrigue and keeps the listener engaged from start to finish.

Another highlight of "Works" is the sheer technical prowess displayed by Sollima and his collaborators. Whether it's the intricate fingerpicking on the guitar or the nimble bowing on the cello, each performance is executed with precision and passion. The interplay between instruments is seamless, showcasing the remarkable chemistry between the musicians, who demonstrate that they feel comfortable in an atmosphere of avant-garde and neo-classicism.

While "Works" is undeniably a triumph, there are moments where the sheer complexity of the compositions may be overwhelming for some listeners, as well as being too experimental or "chaotic", which is the case with "Byron" and "Hell VI - Conte Ugolino". These tracks come out as too deep into avant-garde territory, pushing the boundaries of conventional music, which may not resonate with everyone, especially if you don't enjoy the rude vocals of Sun Ra and Yoko Ono, or if you haven't read Dante's "Commedia", or if you just don't like Italian.

Overall, Giovanni Sollima's "Works" is an excellent showcase of musical innovation and creativity. With its eclectic blend of instruments and genre-defying compositions, it's a must-listen for anyone seeking a truly unique auditory experience.
