Review Summary: BENEATH THE MURKY WATERS

There has always been something about Finnish death metal that really gets me going. From early pioneers like Demilich and Adramelech to 2010s stuff like Stench of Decay....the list could go on and on. Finnish death metal bands just have the murkiest and filthiest sound out there. Its as if a worm infested corpse just rose from the grave and started belting out skull fucking death metal. Lie in Ruins is another in a long line of Finnish death metal bands and I hope they're here to stay because their most recent album, Floating in Timeless Streams, is an absolute monster.

The main thing that immediately drew me into this album overall was the fantastic production. Take a look at the cover art....and now imagine that in music form. Floating in Timeless Streams is dark, its ***ing eerie and beyond all else it is MEATY AS HELL. The riffs here are so pulverizing you'd think you were being beaten over the noggin with a spiked bat. This is more mid tempo death metal overall but there are some absolutely crushing doom parts, most notably on my personal favorite track "The Path". We all know that the best part, and most alluring part, of any great death metal album is reliant on how good and catchy the riffs are and how the production makes them sound. Lie in Ruins hits the nail on the head in both regards. This is a perfect balance between the lo-fi old-school Finnish death metal sound and more modern sounding death metal.

Listen, nobody is gonna sit here and tell you that Floating in Timeless Streams is the most original or progressive album out there nowadays. There isn't any experimentation or jazz elements or any other mumbo jumbo of any kind at any point throughout this album. It is straight-up in your face corpse fornicating death metal and it will eat your children like Mike Tyson ate Evander Holyfield's ear off his head.
