Review Summary: Well, my life's pretty shit, but I don't mind being alone.
Ruby Fields is an Indie Artist from Australia that I hold dear to my heart. Ruby is just like you or me. They have fears, they have loves and they have grocery shopping that needs to be done. The main difference between Ruby and I, is Ruby can write a catchy song and I cannot.
Opening ‘Permanent Hermit’ with ‘Dinosaurs’ is the perfect welcome blanket for those who are new to Ruby. It IS what Ruby is. The Australian accent skipping over plucked guitars that swell into a distorted bass driven ending. This is the blueprint for what you are stepping into. A collection of 9 tracks that weave between soft pop songs, pub punk tracks and indie country moments all drawn together by Ruby’s straightforward but cutting vocals and lyricism.
Ruby isn’t afraid to let you know that you’re a ***ty person. Ruby understands that they may also be a ***ty person and may rely too much on alcohol. They are ok with the fact that they would much rather be sitting at home all day by themselves then talking with you. And that’s ok, because Ruby has a way with words that makes the snarky, self-loathing attitude sound pleasant and welcoming.
I'm scared of the fact
I've been to more funerals in my life
Than weddings yeah
I've lost some close mates of mine
Blunt, straight to the point, and complete honesty is all Ruby is willing to give you and its all you are going to hear. ‘Permanent Hermit’ is Ruby through and through, take it or leave it – I don’t think Ruby cares.
