Review Summary: I've wasted time that was not always mine...

Acetone's self-titled album is quite a lovely set of laid-back indie tunes inflected with country and slacker rock flavors. The sound on display here is just extremely tasteful, wonderfully recorded smooth guitar tones and vocals grounded by great rhythm work, all working to create a delightfully relaxed and melancholic vibe. This is a side of slowcore that I wish more artists would lean into; surely there are depressive elements here, but it's a comforting melancholy for the most part, slacker in the truest sense of recognizing that it's alright to accept one's laziness on occasion. You may have regrets, but you're not going to let them get you down...for now, at least. The result is an extremely listenable and undemanding 57 minutes of music, and while the songwriting may not always be particularly impressive, and most of the individual highlights ("Every Kiss," "Germs," and "Shobud," and "All You Know" in particular) come in the first half, it all flows together cohesively enough that it's far from a major flaw. The perfect soundtrack for a lazy summer afternoon when you know you probably should get outside and do something but really would rather simply lay back in the air conditioning.

A quickie this one, maybe a glorified soundoff but whatever, this deserves a thread and some more attention.

Thanks folks! I thought you in particular might like this, Sunny!

And yeah, for old albums that I want to give exposure but don’t have too much to “say” about per se I think a glorified soundoff is great, long as it’s a solid “paragraph” rather than a quip or meme or whatever.

I really dig the guitar playing on this. The cover art matches the vibe nicely.

“All You Know” has rapidly become one of my favorite songs of all time.

Dang I'll have to revisit that tune now see what I think

Boney try 'Where You're Coming From' from the new Buck Meek, reminds me a little of Wilco's 'The Late Greats' when the guitar comes in after the chorus - one of my faves of the year now!

Yeah listening to 'All You Know' it sounds a bit like a more dreamy version of 'Sad and Beautiful World' by Sparklehorse, real nice

Bumped this to a 4.5, still wish a few of the songs stood out more songwriting-wise but this is just so damn listenable and creates such a wonderful ~vibe~ across its runtime. A vinyl reissue of the band’s full discography was announced last week, gonna have to snag this one at the very least.

The follow up album York Blvd. might be even better than this.

Zak knows :D

These are a favorite of Jason Pierce, he brought them on tour with Spiritualized way back and he wrote the introduction to the liner notes of their recent reissue box set.
