Review Summary: Inanna converges one for the ages

The landscape of death metal is astonishing, and melodeath is no exception; it's a genre in which the sonic tapestry intertwines with ferocious intensity and intricate harmonies. There are but a few bands that stand head and shoulders above the rest. Amongst these luminaries, one finds the ethereal and haunting presence of Inanna, a band whose artistry transcends above all others. With Converging Ages, Inanna has solidified their place among the elite, showcasing an unparalleled level of musical sophistication and emotional depth.

The album opens with the thunderous assault of "Doom of Mankind," a track that sets the tone for the entire journey that awaits the listener. From the very first note, Inanna unleashes a torrential storm of riffs, seamlessly blending the aggressive and melodic elements in a breathtaking display of virtuosity. The composition displays an impressive command over dynamics, transitioning effortlessly between blistering speed and haunting atmospheres, captivating the listener from start to finish.

Converging Ages continues its voyage with "Gilgamesh," a sonic odyssey that takes us deep into the realms of myth and ancient lore. The band's ability to weave a sonic narrative is remarkable, as they paint a vivid landscape with intricate guitar work, entwined with thunderous rhythms and haunting growls of vocalist Max Neira. The song displays an unbridled sense of balance, allowing the various elements to coalesce into a cohesive whole, leaving a mark on the listener's psyche. Beyond the realm of time and memory lies the aptly-named "Beyond Time and Memory," which transcends beyond the confines of mortal existence. Inanna's prowess in creating atmospheric passages shines brightly here, as the listener is transported to ethereal realms through haunting melodies and ethereal clean vocals. The delicate interplay between the guitars and keyboards creates an otherworldly ambiance, evoking a sense of both melancholy and awe.

"The Delicate Balance of Terror" embraces the inherent duality of the human experience, where fragility and aggression coexist. Inanna masterfully blends crushing riffs with soaring melodic lines, juxtaposing moments of sheer brutality with breathtaking beauty. The band's ability to seamlessly navigate between contrasting emotions is a testament to their maturity as musicians and their profound understanding of the human psyche. As the listener navigates the sonic labyrinth, they encounter "The Lighthouse," a respite amidst the tempestuous seas. Here, Inanna showcases their ability to craft intricate and emotionally charged instrumentals that transport the listener to the realm of introspection. The track serves as a testament to the band's versatility, demonstrating their prowess not only in creating intense and powerful compositions but also in evoking profound emotions through instrumental passages alone.

Inanna's audacity reaches its zenith with "Embracing the Fleshless Ecstasy,"; this one is a true tour de force, encompassing all the elements that make Inanna's music so compelling. The soaring melodies intertwine with relentless aggression, leading the listener on a cathartic journey through the depths of human despair and transcendence. "Astral" serves as a celestial interlude, a moment of respite before the grand finale that awaits. The track is characterized by its ethereal ambiance and intricate guitar work, evoking a sense of weightlessness and cosmic vastness. Inanna's ability to create a sense of transcendence through their music is truly remarkable, transporting the listener to a realm beyond the physical.

Finally, the album reaches its climax with "Sea of the Dead"; clocking in at a staggering 18 minutes, this sprawling epic is a testament to Inanna's ambition and artistic vision. It unfolds like an ancient saga, drawing the listener deeper into its labyrinthine sonic passages, gradually revealing its secrets and hidden depths. Through its eerie inception all the way to the soaring solos and cascading melodics, "Sea of the Dead" is an rollercoaster of sorrow and triumph. The track exemplifies the band's ability to craft expansive soundscapes, creating a narrative to transcend the frontiers of time and space.

Converging Ages is a tour de force of Inanna's unparalleled melodeath mastery. A sonic tapestry interwoven with intricate melodic sequences, crushing riffs, and ethereal atmospheric emotions that transport the listener to ancient and celestial realms. Whether you're speaking of the thunderous onset of "Doom of Mankind", or the grandiose, epic conclusion of "Sea of the Dead," it's abundantly obvious how Inanna takes us on a journey through the depths and mysteries of human existence. It's an essential addition to any metal connoisseur's collection, a testament to its boundless potential, and a timeless masterpiece that should continue to resonate with listeners for ages to come.

well this is probably the first sput review i've seen use the word 'labyrinthine.' solid but could be a little more concise with its descriptors. stuff like "...to ethereal realms through haunting melodies and ethereal clean vocals" or 'transcend'/'transcendence' being repeated just reminds me of when i was trying to reach a wordcount on my research papers.

either way i'll probably add this album to my todo list

Checked out most of it when I was at work and I can dig it. Compared to most prog death the song structure seems more straight forward while still retaining dynamics, flows well. I will say tho my first impression was the remaster sounds like a dethklok album lol, switched to the original mix and that sounded way better imo

Yeah i figured some may like the original recording better which is ok. Its too soft coming from my speakers though so i like the remaster way more.
