Review Summary: Melanie Martinez's latest album is a captivating exploration of identity and introspection. With its pop-rock sound and emotionally charged lyrics, Martinez pushes the boundaries of her established style while maintaining her signature dark and satirica

Musically, Melanie Martinez takes a departure from her alt-pop roots and ventures into pop-rock songwriting. From the ethereal ambience of "Void," where Martinez's velvety vocals glide over gritty guitar-driven tracks, to the stripped-down beauty of "Light Shower," she showcases her versatility as an artist. The latter track, in particular, surprises with its simplicity and uncharacteristically optimistic view of love. It's a refreshing departure from the darkness that often permeates Martinez's music, displaying her growth as an artist and her willingness to explore new sonic landscapes.

While Martinez stretches her musical boundaries, she doesn't completely abandon her signature style. Fans of the Cry Baby era will find solace in tracks like "Spider Web," where the xylophone melodies echo her musical origins, evoking a sense of nostalgia. Conversely, songs like "The Contortionist" offer darker moments reminiscent of her previous release, K-12. Martinez's ability to seamlessly blend these different elements showcases her maturity as an artist, making the album a well-rounded and satisfying experience.

Martinez's lyrics, as always, are a standout feature. Drawing inspiration from past-life-regression therapy books, she cleverly disguises profound concepts within earthly themes. This double entendre creates a frequency that resonates with listeners, forging connections on both a visceral and intellectual level. With lines like "Like a priest behind confession walls, I judge myself/Kneeling on a metal grater" in "Void," Martinez exposes her raw vulnerability, inviting us into her inner world.

Melanie Martinez's latest album is a testament to her artistry and growth. With its dark pop sound, satirical edge, and emotionally charged lyrics, it showcases Martinez's ability to push boundaries while staying true to her unique style. It's a bold and captivating release that leaves us eagerly anticipating her future musical endeavors.

Melanie Martinez always gave me the creeps tbh, even before the allegations about her came out.

^ Did a cursory look and the allegations didn’t look like they held much water and had some evidence against them

I don't give a rat's shit about her as a person one way or another. This is obnoxious Tiktok-core and I shamefully have the vinyl on my shelf since my girlfriend loves it, lol.

Ain’t no shame. Shame is reserved for when you’ve actually done something wrong. No need to put that on yourself, even as a subconscious suggestion, for this

@MoM - Gotcha, didn't realize events played out the way they did. Not like I did a lot of research myself, lol, just kinda went with word-of-mouth. But I'll admit when I'm wrong. I think it's her little schoolgirl image that just gives me the creeps. Idk, I think any grown adult who makes that their public image is a little wack.

^ Understandable! I worry about the subconscious associations and normalizations that may occur if we blur the lines like she has, the “lolita” child-like doll. These things can lead to fringe normalization of things we do noooooot want

That's because her stans went on a massive slander campaign against her accusers

good to know she is a fan of Tesseract and The Contortionist, naming your album after a Tesseract album is very cool
