Review Summary: Brokencyde 2.0

Just when you thought the hyperpop fad was over, these two jackasses try to bring it back from the grave it should have been buried in long ago. 100 Gecs have always been the musical equivalent of the worst of Florida Man and have been trying to revive the absolute worst points of the music of the 2000s and early 2010s. Overused, poorly-implemented autotune? Check. Bafflingly stupid lyrics? Check. Rancid, out-of-place "lol funny" post-modernistic bulls**t? Check. "But Sarah", you say. "Aren't they just one giant ironic s**tpost?". I don't know about you, but I require my s**tposting to include this long forgotten element called "comedy".

Everything about 10000 gecs is a valuable lesson on how not to make music, how not to meme, and how to successfully communicate to the lowest common denominator and get away with it by making The 1975-tier garbage appeal to idiotic pseudo-mainstream hipsters who slam pop music for simply existing. There's no substance to anything—just a bunch of rehashed Warped band tropes overdosed to the point of humorless absurdity. The lyrics are rehash #972,726,838 of the same generic emo/scene genericity, the vocals have been produced to the point where it sounds like they sampled the worst possible forgotten crunkcore band they could find on MySpace dot com circa 2006, and any sense of irony, sincerity, or greatness, is nowhere to be found.

The decline of music may not be an inevitability nor a finality, but if this is what's qualified as what's good these days, then perhaps its time to put it in that category. Nothing is listenable here, nothing is entertaining, nothing is original, but everything will cause loss of sanity. Is it temporary or permanent? Hell if I know. Leave it to the experts to find out and spare your life from this monstrosity.

Your review doesn't mention a single song by name. It doesn't even refer to one specific moment that you took issue with. You're just throwing out generalizations and making sweeping claims without doing any of the leg work to back them up. The album may be as bad as you suggest (I haven't listened to it and don't plan to), but this is not an effective review.

Your review would be much more effective at conveying that harsh reality if you used examples to support your claims. You can’t conclude that “nothing is listenable” without identifying a single song or moment that you didn’t like. There is nothing in this review that suggests you even listened to the album.

I would say take yourself semi-seriously on a music journalism site when posting a music review but this is sputnik

but yeah I agree with Ebola. You only spend a couple of sentences referencing the actual music, also you never explain why they sound like Brokencyde. This reads like more of an attack on the band / their style than the actual music on the album, which I am sure I will agree is shite after I listen to it

If they (allegedly) dont take themselves semi-seriously then why should I

because you're the critic, you should want people to take your writing seriously (or else who is going to read your work?). If you have a harsh take, be ready to defend that take. This is hardly a defense

first sentence of that second para would make for a great parting shot in a real review

Gonna agree with the OP. I post my reviews because it’s fun, i don’t give a fuck about if my reviews are professional and formal. It’s a hobby and we aren’t the league of album critics, let people write wacky over the top reviews if they want. Adds to the fun, if anything was a dry wall of text (which I am very guilty of), then this place would be boring

the nature of the hobby (be honest) begets knowledge of degrees of humor and the ways in which discursive manipulation of it differentiates itself from banal to fun. the issue in question has more to do with public imagination than with "formality" imo

You should absolutely have fun with this hobby! But it’s flat out wrong to suggest that having fun and producing quality writing are mutually exclusive. Asking OP to cite a few examples to support their extreme point of view is not demanding “a dry wall of text,” and it’s dishonest to suggest otherwise. You don’t have to write formally to write effectively.
