Review Summary: The album that Anakin referenced when he said, “This is where the fun begins”.

This metalcore album includes buildups, breakdowns, and holy polyrhythms. Varied guitar work abounds! The guitarist goes so ham it sounds like djent, nu-metal, and thrash wrapped in one cute package. Still, the guitar’s most common display is old school chugs and breakdowns with mathematic rhythm. It’s standard practice for modern metalcore, but the opening track is less than generic with endless technical noodling reminding me of Protest The Hero. Mix in a solid drummer with slammed double bass pedals and even a sacred blastbeat and you have a recipe for success. However, there’s more to it than that.

The vocal work is the feature at the center of it all. The riffs plus male/female vocals brought me back to the heyday of Deadlock - I love that. Singing could’ve used an iota more editing polish but I’m barely complaining, both voices sound great. Eternal Closure’s male vocalist also gives a standard, but effective post-hardcore singing style. In addition, growls/shrieks permeate the ear with war-like hate. These harsh vocals would fit snug in a black metal album, they are quite wall punching and sometimes hair raising.

If the rest of the music was as exceptional as the opening track, Eternal Closure would be an unstoppable force, but the way they slowed down has me disturbed, stricken with sadness. The band too often rely on old school breakdowns to fill the album, it slows momentum and their soundscape takes a backseat - some of the breakdowns are also decidedly average. When the riffs went berserk, intertwining with delicate vocals and fairly large choruses, the band shone and felt like what Spiritbox could’ve been - the song Exiled highlights this with ease. Unfortunately, there isn’t much making this band stand out. They’re going through riffs that Jinjer, ERRA, and Oceans Ate Alaska have almost certainly played.

Eternal Closure scream, “a walking contradiction” yet their music and also lyrical content isn’t far off from a walking stereotype. In Practice What You Preach they use lyrics such as:

Kill your high horse
Get down one more notch
Where’s the compassion
Now that you’ve become the ruler
Kill your high horse

Outright blunt lyricisms in this album tell a story about issues with people and the world - poetic it is not. Lyrics match the music, it being a straightforward metalcore album, no apologies given. That’s the music in a nutshell for better or worse.

Despite some standard moments, I consider this release above average. Pretty much every song had a new riff that was peachy and quite fun. When you count in their vocal variety as well, it’s a pretty picture. This may not be the album that escalates them to stardom, but with their chops I have high hopes for them. Some of these riffs are quite spicy, take my word for it.

Reviewer’s note:

Knowing that this band is from a Sputnik user I wanted to be as thorough as possible with this review and may have sounded brutal. In truth, I was greatly entertained by this album. I enjoyed every song, and when all is said and done, isn’t that the point? Similarly, I’ve enjoyed every song I’ve heard from Eternal Closure thus far - that’s impressive. Give this small band a listen today and you may leave astounded.

Glad you enjoyed it! In case that wasn't clear I am the singer dude and guitarist/main songwriter, and all those mean ass growls are by our female vocalist Kat. Though Dimensions Apart and Moonrider were mostly written by another member.

So from what I understand your highlights were Conflict I and Exiled and the lowlight maybe From One Side to Another? That one was deliberately written as a simpler track, which I don't do all that often so maybe I'm not quite as good at that stuff yet idk haha. Really happy you liked the vocals, we've often been told they were ok at best before

Anyways, thanks a lot for the review. It is indeed kind of brutal in parts but I appreciate that, makes the compliments feel more real! And yeah I rate my own albums, don't care what sputnik has to say about that haha.

The vocals are sick for the most part, a few off moments, but nothing bad

@Pizza Chapter II is coming either in late 2023 or beginning of 2024. If you like the more technical/proggier side of things I think you may enjoy it even more ;)

@MoM Thanks a lot! Really, really glad to hear the vocals are great. It's always what scares me the most when releasing music haha. I'm quite proud we used very very little pitch correction on this thing too.

My DNA as a writer is what it is haha. As much as I try to be more modern in my approach, I can't help it haha. I think this makes for a nice blend though.

@Pizza My brother (drums) is a big fan of Star Wars so that summary is a big W.

That's awesome to hear. I actually recorded the drums for Dimensions Apart, I record at least one drum track per album

I did check a few songs off of this before but never really commented on it. It's for sure fun, groovy metalcore with nice intricacies in the instrumentation.

Riffs go pretty hard, not that big of a fun on the fairly quiet female vocals, they don't really fit the energy in the instrumentals. The screams are great as mentioned in the review!

I think with less polished, still sadly flat sounding production (although the vocals could use more or louder effects) this record would be improved quite a bit. Could also fix my complaint about the female clean vocals.

To not end in negativity, I gotta say I quite enjoy this, especially the instrumental part!

Crazy that I was one of the last people to talk to TheSpirit. He is missed, and may he rest in peace. ❤️

Great bump btw, I’m excited for new music.

Thanks for checking it out man. One day I'll be able to get a 4 out of you haha. As far as the clean vocals being a little bit quiet I get what you mean. But personally I often think that most productions are too vocal-centric. I like being able to hear the whole arrangement a little bit better, but that's a preference thing for sure.

Thanks for the kind words. If you had to pick one highlight what would it be?

Wouldn't say the vocals are too quiet volume wise, I think the way of singing and the production on the vocals takes the energy out of them. Some parts really would sound much better being belted instead of sung quietly, and doing the EQ a bit different and having more reverb/delay could help.

If you improve the production alone I think you can get a 4.0 out of me, if the musical quality remains the same. But if you really want good ratings I think it would help getting some more energy into the female vocals by singing some parts with more power.

Also I was wondering, is the production done by someone in the band?

I think my highlight would probably be the intro of the first track, it really fits super well as a first track. So much energy in those riffs
