Moon of Foul Magics includes black/death metal that’s not completely one-dimensional. It also includes some heavily stylish acoustics, tasteful and fetching. The title track includes a long guitar solo that reminds me of Scar Symmetry, a beautiful acoustic section, and their lightning metallics. Before anything else, the title track must be heard for the way it deals with black/death tropes in superior fashion. While the album can’t possibly match the immensely satisfying and fluid writing of that song, Moon of Foul Magics is still a damn good album.

The guitar work astounds in this album, they’re constantly cycling melodic and bass patterns while yet another hair whipping riff is thrown into the mix. Guitars never seem to stop their blistering bloodshed aside from purely acoustic tracks like On Black Wings of Eternity, and the drummer certainly doesn’t slow down. Harsh vocals are also at work here providing blackened shrieks that never lose their stun power. The album is a coherent integration of black and death metal that manages to avoid contrived repetition.

While this isn’t necessarily the uniquest album in the genre this year, the riffs were distinct enough to legit keep me awake (and I didn’t sleep enough). The band’s tendency to shower dynamic talents entertained me - every instrument player had technical abilities. When a band’s this talented you can bet there will be instrumental highlights - little nuggets of gold - it’s non-stop in this case and even the bassist showed off star moments. No section was boring either including the acoustic interludes which didn’t bore me for once - a rarity. Perhaps with variety they could have spiced it up since the tracks blend into each other a little expected and unceremoniously; it ultimately isn’t an issue. Moon of Foul Magics is a heavy album that steps on your face and refuses to leave.
