Review Summary: Expanding on the sound of her debut whilst introducing new ideas, Billie's electric personality shines through here, mixing catchy vocal passages with emotionally charged moments Following up 'When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go?' was always going to be a difficult proposition for young starlet Billie Eilish. Maintaining the exact sound of that record would lead to accusations of stagnancy, yet too much deviation could be seen as a betrayal by her legion of fans. As such, when 'Happier Than Ever' was announced, there was much anticipation but also some trepidation, as her debut album had been surprisingly good for a new pop star. Thankfully, the sophomore album would blow her debut out of the water.
'Happier Than Ever' is an album that finds its artist branching out and experimenting a little more. Gone is much of the creepy imagery and shock factor of her debut, replaced here by some phenomenal melodies and truly knockout highlights. "Getting Older" discusses the difficulties of emerging into fame at a young age, and Billie's sullen soft vocals sit atop a minimalist instrumental for a while before the second half of the song finds her holding some notes for a little longer. This is a really surprising introduction to the album when one considers the exceptional fashion in which her debut was opened, but it feels somewhat fitting given the differences present on this album.
Fans of her debut will be happy to hear the addictive beats returning in tracks such as "I Didn't Change My Number" and the perfect "Oxytocin." For people looking for more musical depth, the title track is a masterpiece in how to shift dynamics halfway through a track. The first half is a ukelele-led crawl that transitions into a hard-hitting emotional rollercoaster, so that by the time Billie declares "Just F-ing leave me alone" and allows that last note to ring so much longer than the rest, the listener is drawn in and understands exactly the pain behind this song. These masterful vocal moments are scattered throughout the record to provide memorable passages such as the chorus to "Billie Bossa Nova," or the layering of the vocals in "Therefore I Am." Returning to "Oxytocin" for a moment, this is the standout song, containing an energetic dance beat and a return to the seductive aspects of "Bad Guy" with the maturity gained from the extra year in the industry.
Billie Eilish's 'Happier Than Ever' stands out as one of the best pop records of the last decade through the electric personality of the woman herself, and the mixture of down-tempo sultry moments and the hypnotic beats. This is an improvement over her debut in every possible way, with stronger high points and even more consistency, and points to a very bright future ahead.

Still tryna decide on a big discography to tackles next, so fuck it, Billie's other album. I'm happy enough with it, even if it'll get negged into oblivion.

I don’t think I’ve ever heard Billie Eilish (or her personality) described as “electric”.

| | | "I don’t think I’ve ever heard Billie Eilish (or her personality) ever described as “electric”." And that's why a review is subjective, a person's opinion :D But regardless, she is. I think I adore her more than Renee Phoenix now.

| | | i mean, starlet usually refers to actresses, and i feel like i lot of people these days find it weirdly sexualising/infantilising/diminuitive but sure
also, you dont need to describe her as a 'young starlet' . starlet already implies shes young
| | | "'young starlet' . starlet already implies shes young" Actually it means up and coming but whatever lmao
Yes I know its usually used to refer to actresses HISTORICALLY but these days generally gets bandied around. Regardless, its gonna get negged into oblivion already and the mods dont wanna address it so fuck it. To tell the truth its got to the point where I aint even putting in that much effort anymore. When my approval was like 96% after 20 reviews I would put in effort, but since people have license to just neg me into oblivion purely because of who I am not because of the content, I'm not exactly in the mood to put in crazy amounts of effort anyway. This site's virtually dead these days, I'm in two minds about leaving. Back in the days where there would be 30-40 reactions on every review posted, fair enough, but now its the same 3 or 4 people consistently contributing, coupled with a pretty weak moderator team and just a general lack of any real interaction. So yeah the quality here isn't great, but fuck it
| | | Starlet most deffo implies young, not only up and coming . Look dude, it's just very clear you fetishize her and it's weird as fuck
| | | And lol every definition of starlet refers to actresses , and there are even mentions of how it's seen as disparaging
Basically I think your writing sucks and you're heavily in denial

how's my writing?
| | | "Basically I think your writing sucks and you're heavily in denial " - Fair enough.
"Harsh but warranted considering his continued bitching, weird comments and almost complete lack of self awareness " - I'm completely self aware. And what weird comments?
I'm not gonna be drawn into an argument that will get me banned hence why I'm not going in detail, but I am seriously curious what weird comments.

| | | "You've mentioned in multiple threads how cute, adorable or sexy Billie is now . " Not said sexy once, but cute adorable and pretty are all terms I've used. I can't help it, she's my favourite celebrity at the moment. I have an obsessive personality, what can I say lmao. But again, not getting drawn into an argument i'll try and stop mentioning it. Alternatively you could just not click on threads of artists you don't like?
