Review Summary: Screamo's next darling.

Yotsuya Kaidan is a Ukrainian 5-piece skramz/post-hardcore band with stories to tell. With releases dating back to 2014, YK are no newcomers to the screamo scene. Early releases represent the band as a raw, energetic juggernaut and by the time they hit their landmark first LP titled Tiny Comet, YK had established themselves as an internationally recognized emotional hardcore/punk act. Spanning four tracks, 'Four Writings To An Elf' careens and jolts the listener to and fro with outbursts of raw emotion and for only being seven minutes, the EP packs a dynamic punch. Recorded in the Ukraine and sent for mixing and mastering to Jack Shirley who best known for working with acts such as Loma Prieta, Deafheaven, State Faults and many more, the release's production is a top tier effort. Much like previous releases, YK maintains their trademark quirks that set them apart from most other bands in their scene right now, one of which being vocal style. It's not quite a whine as it is a painful yell and while some listeners may not speak the same language, the excruciating quality to the singer's yelling make a connection to the audience. To the contrary of their first LP, their newest effort shows far less patience. Sections of brutality quickly turn over and drain the song's energy down through the floor, only to toss over once again into something entirely different without much repeating throughout the record. This is the mantra of a band in their element. They are unafraid to take creative steps that keep their songs alive for so much longer than a simple track length, giving 'Four Writings To An Elf' a distinct staying power that makes it feel far longer than it is. Yotsuya Kaidan has become a great force in international screamo and the future certainly looks exciting for modern skramz with them in the fold.

Long time no review. Hope it's not too painfully bad.

Some I've heard (along with their Sput page) say that these guys have a black metal influence to them. I kinda hear it on the LP but not so much on this EP, so I didn't bother to include it. That LP is certainly worth a listen though.

Thanks man, I think I may do more like this in the near future. Got to bring a whole bunch more skramz to light for the fine folks of Sputnik's betterment and get my writing chops back.
