Review Summary: Progression is for the weak!!!
Disfuneral is a death metal band hailing from France. The band was formed after the collapse of their previous project Herpes. The style here is very much so picking up where that project left off. Herpes had only released a few demos. I managed to snag a copy of their final demo via the fantastic label To Live a Lie while ordering a nice hunk of powerviolence. The demo was pretty killer and as the years passed I was bummed that new material from them never came. Needless to say I was stoked to discover that this project was them after they had decided that Herpes may not be the best name for a band churning out some high quality death metal goodness.
The introduction "Feastering the Undead" opens with some killer, soaring leads that quickly pluck their way into a barrage of rocking ass death metal riffage. The swarm of nasty death metal riffing flirts back and forth with these leads while some Autopsy esque vocals get belted out on top of them. It quickly becomes clear while this beautiful doom infused death metal hits the ear where the primary influence comes from, they do it perfectly however so there's no complaining here.
The title track here is easily the highlight and without a doubt the best one to check if one is trying to get a sense of what to expect here. "Blood Red Tentacle" features the most infectious leads on the album and it's topped off with what might very well be my favorite solo I've heard this year. On the note of solos Disfuneral dishes out their fair share of nicely composed ones throughout the runtime here.
Overall Blood Red Tentacle is a damn fine showcase of some pretty straight forward rocking death metal with a tinge of that sweet punk attitude to top it off. "Feastering the Undead" sets the tone for the filth about to come, "Lord of Discord" riffed so hard I was tempted to mosh with my imaginary friends, and the way "Funeral Maze" slowly bogs out closing the album made me want to click play and do it all over again. These guys clearly love themselves some Autopsy and Abscess and they do a damn fine job paying tribute to those legendary bands. If that sounds up your alley this is easily worth the time, if not Disfuneral won't flip some kind of death/doom loving switch in your brain.
