Review Summary: Misery Made Me…confused.

I was talking to a friend about Silverstein the other day. He mentioned that he felt like they’ve always been teetering on the edge of a cliff in terms of quality. I don’t know if I disagree. While they’ve put out a slew of solid records, only two have really stuck out with me (Discovering the Waterfront and This is How the Wind Shifts).

So after the mess that was A Beautiful Place To Drown, I was somewhat hesitant to listen to this record. So hesitant that I waited a full two months before I had the courage to dive in. I have to admit I was pleasantly surprised, only to be repeatedly reminded as to why I had discarded the band two years ago.

Fundamentally, the album is disjointed. As an example, the opening track was a perfect example of why I didn’t like A Beautiful Place to Drown, only to then be immediately punched in the face with “Die Alone,” which is unquestionably the best song on the record. The rest of the album follows suit. Absolutely banging segments followed by a slog of post-pop-something-core. It’s like they were trying to cater to everyone in the writing of this album, except the problem is that no one ends up being catered to due to the haphazard fashion in which it is pieced together.

Look, I get it. They’re in the 40s for Christ’s sake. If they want to play pop music and have a good old time, I can’t really blame them. But if they’re going to do that, they should embrace it. If they want to go heavy, then ***ing go heavy. If Meshuggah can still do it, so can they. The problem is that Silverstein doesn’t know which way to go, which results in something like a really cool looking car getting stuck in a five-way pileup at an intersection.

That’s not to say it’s all BAD. It’s not bad. Like I said, I enjoyed myself. It’s just confused, and therefore I’m confused. Hopefully next time they’ll have figured out which way they’re going.

For me the point is simple, Shane Told writes songs that are still of a high level (die hard, misery) PMR write songs that are ok, but not as good. His song writing style is soft and sensitive. The melody is not smooth enough. It's really strange to hear heavy instruments going for the sensitive and delicate content of PMR.

The band are now taking some of the bad reviews as a sign that listeners are not accepting their change in style. But in fact it's really not about style at all. Music that is not good enough should not be included. They are flaws that cannot be covered up by production, sound effects, instrumentation or music video ideas.

On the brightside though, they have been very encouraging of PMR and they are great band members.

@notagenius TBH, I didn’t realize PMR was part of the songwriting process but that makes a ton of sense in terms of the stylistic direction. I guess more my problem is that if they wanted to go the softer route they COULD do it at a high quality level, but they aren’t.

@pizzamachine Thanks boss. Appreciate you

Spontaneous decision… sorry…

Also @notagenius, I was half dead when I typed that answer last night. What I meant to say was I didn’t realize the songwriting basically boiled down to Shane and PMR. That makes sense. But yes, they are good band members.

Shane wrote two songs die alone and misery. PMR wrote the others. As a comparison, if we don't mention the early ones. Dead Reflection is written by Shane Told. The difference in the quality of the songs is obvious.

After singing PMR's songs at shows, Shane would fist bump with him to show encouragement. This simply made me feel bad about myself of dissing PMR. But I still insist that a band must be responsible for the work they put out and they should be held accountable for the quality.

Yeah I mean they’re putting out a body of work as a group. They should absolutely be held accountable for quality. Agreed.

And I’ve never seen them live so… even when Warped Tour was a thing…

This would be a 4.5 for me just for the Altar / Mary as its probably my favourite track by them since This is How The Winds Shift however Bankrupt is simply so bad the inclusion on the record drops it a whole star. Rest the the album is a nice return to sold form after Infinite.

Nice review!

@Wilrus. Altar is really good but I felt the second half kind of killed it a bit TBH. Should have been two separate tracks.

@pizza Yeah I have to work that out… I need to see The Dear Hunter first though.

The tone of the album cover does not fit the music here AT ALL. Pretty average stuff anyways..
