Review Summary: A rough start, but they can only go up from here.

In Backgrounds is the debut EP from Alone I Stand (the band from Sputnik user GreyShadow). It is an emo/post-hardcore release that often shares the math riffs, and brazen craziness that Ninjaspy uses. The songwriting is questionable at times, with certain tracks heavily reliant on noodling riffs and vocal overload to shock the listener, but on the other hand, Alone I Stand do not shrug at variety. The band can change their aggression into a cool calm in a second. One such moment is the goth pop sounding song Always Fallen Butterfly, similar in vibe to certain old Blacqk Audio songs. Blindside and AFI are bands I would also compare Alone I Stand to.

Currently, the downfall of In Backgrounds is not the rather creative riffs, or the varied songwriting. The singer in the EP sings flatly, dancing around the correct notes like it’s a game to avoid them. The singer/shrieker here sounds like a rough version of the vocalist from The World Is a Beautiful Place…, and some shrieks are unsettling. More practice is clearly needed. That being said, he fits the genre nicely, giving a heart felt performance, sounding like the UrbanDictionary definition of emo. He also has surprising gumption for a new singer, a trend I hope to see continue. He absolutely rocket launches on all cylinders and makes the mic his bitch - nice.

In Backgrounds is an incredibly raw introduction to the band, that intrigues nonetheless. It is a flawed EP, but quite entertaining. I enjoyed the opening song, and from there on the music was full of bumps and thrills that put a smile on my face. This is a head turning EP, with enough creative spunk to showcase a band that’s just getting started. I’m looking forward to whichever path the band decide to travel in the future.

Omg I’m so glad you took this well. 😅 I saw your comment about how you wanted lots of comparisons so I went for it lol. I’m sure your singing will get better, good luck man.

Pizza really did it! I listened to it as well yesterday and the noodling was a bit overindulgent at points and the vocals weren't stellar but you got a lot of gumption and think you'll be able to build off it well if you toy around with it more. I didn't hear all of your inspirations from your list (granted some im not as familiar wit) but some were super evident. For a first release it sounds pretty clean as well. Keep it up!

Appreciate the feedback guys!!! I felt like for a first release it was better to get things out than super fixate on making it the most perfect thing. I've got a lot in the pipeline so I hope you'll stay tuned!

As I said, I'm impressed by your guitar skills. The singing reminds me of La Dispute, which isn't really my thing but many people seem to enjoy it. A good EP overall, amazing for a first release!

First track sounds like a Wonder Years song, morphing into Hotel Books/Movements, then right into the most La Dispute inspired song possibly ever written. The mixing on this is a little weird it feels very left channel heavy, and some of these vocal parts are very oversung even by La Dispute standards. It's chaotic, but I will say some parts are very catchy, and I adore the conviction, it sounds like you put everything into this and that's something worth applauding. Track 3 has some Coheed vibes, starts a little shaky, but gets going throughout. There are some spicy bass parts and the drumming is pretty great. Some of the singing is a little flat at parts where it is meant to hit, and I wish you would have done another couple takes to get it right. Track 4 might be your most cohesive track, it's the least riff salad, but honest question, what's up with the wavering British accent on "You've got to get serious"? Back to riff salad on Walpurgisnacht, but this song is so bizarre not only because of the 4th wall breaking part, but all of the ideas shoved into one track. After one full listen, this is a cacophony of ideas all smashed together in a jumbled mass of parts, that somehow.. works?

It's the vocal melodies in the first minute that remind me, not the midwest emo underneath. I honestly don't know what to rate this lol, it's so disjointed but also so charming

Nice review pizza, after my week of checking out emo for the Build-An-Album contest I may have to give this a listen and see how it compares!

yeah number 1 thing i regret is not doing more takes that i KNOW i could've gotten. idk how I let some of it slide. i wanted this out last year so I guess i felt like i might've rushed the execution towards the end but what can you do now except accept it

lmao i'm so glad you made the british comment i was waiting for someone to bring that up. idk, it's just always how i heard it in my head lol!

really appreciate the comments though DungeonBoy! can't say i'll tone down the chaos/riff salad haha but we'll definitely be refining down the line!
