Review Summary: a very close description of an euphoric trip
Drone Addicts might sound like something ambient, but as Travel unfolds you realize that the Brooklyn duo has tricked us - they play anything but ambient and drone. This release is a loaded spring of EDM, downtempo and bouncy house.
Branching, the opener, is the most upbeat and energetic part of the whole thing, exploring the territories of the beloved straight beat and fat bass. This number is a good illustration to how Drone Addicts approach writing their stuff - nothing revolutionary but high quality reimagining of the classic electronic tropes.
Don’t want to almost takes the listener to the realm of breakbeat; but the choice of keyboards and sound shows the composer's love for ambient. Really, if it was a bit slower we’d totally get Carbon Based Lifeforms on ecstasy.
With the third track (and fourth too, for that matter) Travel begins to fall apart, slow down and change the positive mood to something more anxious. Lost and 45 slowly transitions to Victim Longer, and both of them would easily fit as background music in the mall or movie credits (that is a sign of quality).
Cleaning is the most dissociative track, that sounds really moody in the wider landscape of Travel. Drone Addicts chose to end the release with an eerie atmosphere, an interesting pick.
To sum it up, Travel is a very close description of an euphoric trip. It kicks off as something super pleasant and positive, to grow darker and paranoiac with time. Exactly the right soundtrack to lose your *** in the middle of spring.
