When i was exploring the rock bands of the early 90's, i came upon pearl jam. It was a band i had heard of a lot, so i was very interested in what this revolutionary grunge rock band had to offer. I had listened to a lot of their old songs from albums like ten and yield before getting their latest album,'Pearl Jam'. Many bands of the 90's have failed to produce albums which are consistently good, and to remain relevant to the changing music scene as time has passed. However, pearl jam is not one of those bands. After hearing their latest album, i definitely have to say that this is one of the truly great bands that the alternative/grunge era of the early 90's has produced. The formula of pearl jam's new album is simple. They go back to their roots. This album has a great mix of songs which essentially typify pearl jam.For example, there are typical grunge songs from pearl jam like 'life wasted' and 'world wide suicide' which are really catchy and rocking. One thing that has always impressed me about pearl jam is their ability to produce very powerful and moving songs such as 'black' and 'release',which surely gives many fans goosebumps when they listen to them. The great thing is that this album also focuses a lot on the powerful vocals of eddie vedder, with songs like 'gone' and 'severed hand' showing what a musical talent he is. I also found the song 'parachute' really interesting because the band was trying out a new sound with this and it worked perfectly, to give a very calm and pleasing song. Another great song on this album is definitely 'inside job' because very few bands can pull off a song which builds up like this. The song starts off with very enjoyable instrumentals for about 2 minutes and then vocals kick in with vedder's husky voice helping to build up the song. Melodic and slow pieces such as 'parachutes' and 'Gone' help in great deal to complement cracking songs like 'comatose' and 'big wave' which are very gritty and rocking tracks. Unlike other bands which completely change their sound to suit mainstream needs, pearl jam has simply come up with typical grunge tracks which are also catchy and enjoyable. Another important advice about this album is not to judge all the songs the first time you hear them. Pearl jam has always produced songs that grow on you, rather than songs that catch you at first glance. After a few listens, the essence of pearl jam will definitely get to you. Get this album. It is definitely worth your money.

^Treat it like a literary piece, i.e. a novel or an essay.

Originally, I was massively dissapointed with this. But I gave it a few listens, and it's grown on me. Especially "Inside Job". Probably one of PJ's best.

this album is definately more accessible than their last few albums which will please a lot of people. it is a good effort with the pairing of life wasted nd world wide suicide getting the album off to a cracking start then come back nd inside job closing the album in a unique way. the army reserve chorus is my only question mark
