Review Summary: The Duality of Addiction “ The Sun Sleeps, As If It Never Was is a story of two interconnected perspectives of addiction, the afflicted, and the innocent. The afflicted is increasingly consumed by his vices, distracted, and secretive, and ultimately distorts his connection with his loved one, leaving only fractured memories in place of the love they once had.”
Trey Celaya’s words dig deep into the heart. Despite the short track length of two songs separated by a mere interlude, The Sun Sleeps, As If It Never Was tells a story that transcends the near 11-minute duration. Within the instrumentation itself, there’s almost a beauty that is saturated by an emotional tinge that one cannot push aside. The intense atmosphere is an omnipresent force that buries itself in between the heaviness, reminding listeners of the emotional story at hand, especially displayed within the interlude track. The combination of Invent Animate’s standard progressive metalcore style of complex riffs and technical drumming proficiency with the overwhelming ambiance of powerful melody embodies the duality of the hurting story of the addicted and the innocent. The melodic choruses and ambient bridges present themselves as a hopeful moment with a desire for the addicted to return to the love of those they’ve separated from. However, the heavy breakdowns and riffs are filled with a searing despair that symbolizes the lost soul of the addicted. The mere feeling of music only touches the surface of what the story holds within.
“ The lyrics are based on a true story surrounding my family’s history with addiction, and with these songs, I wanted to bring to light how subtle the signs are and how severe the damage can be when these dark secrets stay buried. The importance of perspective has been my biggest takeaway from all of this turmoil, and sadly, most addicts fall into addiction with a spirit of naivety, thinking it will cost them nothing.”
The pain within Markus in the words ”How do you sleep at night / With a war inside you? / How does it feel to die / Knowing I've forgotten you?” penetrates deeply, leaving the listener with a portrait of the addicted failing to even recognize the damage of what they’ve fallen into. With each ticking second of the EP, the addicted falls deeper and deeper into the abyss of addiction, becoming ”A broken soul in the wasteland.” However, it is not just the addicted that feels this emptiness, but also the innocent in the life of the addicted. ”I'm afraid / That if I take my eyes off you for just a second / You'll find a way to be lonely” embodies the fear of the loved ones around the addicted, afraid to let them go because they may go too far off the ledge. This shift in perspective displays the duality of the situation, those who are hurting from the addiction and those hurting from the addicted ones in their life. In a final moment of desperation and anger, the ultimate words of ”(You want to be free) / Fear in the eyes of your family / Loss in the eyes of a lover / (You give me no faith) / Silence” are screamed, ending the story of the addicted but grieving the story of the innocent.
“ If you are the afflicted, consider the cost of losing everything you love and hold dear. If you are the innocent, consider the cost of enabling your loved ones. It is not loving, and it is not too late for recovery.”

I think the second to last paragraph may need some fixing.
Should there be an apostrophe after Markus? Also I believe it’s Marcus
“However, it is not just the addicted that, but also the innocent in the life of the addicted.” This doesn’t flow right. Should there be something after ‘that’ that was removed accidentally (like maybe “suffers”?) or should it not be there?
“… becoming [i]”A broken soul in the wasteland.”[i] However…” I think you missed a / here for the italics.
Review is awesome though man. Glad one exists now for this monster

Don't really consider Frontierer in same vein (though it is one hell of a record), Erra is great as well though. Now I'm actually gonna spin that again, cheers.
