Review Summary: ‘A Different Kind’, the EP from Social Gravy released in September 2020, feels and sounds like one of those little aural gifts musicians crafted to help fans get through in a year of lockdown fatigue and uncertainty.

Despite a global shutdown in 2020, when coronavirus among many things wreaked havoc also on music, many artists didn’t shelve their plans to release their music to the world and thus provided listeners with a refuge in unprecedented times.

‘A Different Kind’, the EP from Social Gravy released in September 2020, feels and sounds like one of those little aural gifts musicians crafted to help fans get through in a year of lockdown fatigue and uncertainty.

The indie rock duo of Brad Kohn and Vee Bordukov introduced itself to the music scene in 2017 with the debut LP Behind Every Yes, an album that encompasses an incredible range of different genres and reveals many of their influences. Even though ‘A Different Kind’ doesn’t mark a departure from Social Gravy’s usual sound, its four tracks are more pop-infused than their first work. But the people who came to appreciate their brand of indie rock with blues and rock-inspired riffs won’t be disappointed by the offering on this EP.

The first track, ‘Happening Now’ starts on a slightly lackluster note and it picks up pace after the two and half minute mark but even though it’s an uplifting track it pales in comparison with the other three songs. On the other hand, ‘Anywayz’ might be running only for little over two minutes but packs a powerful punch and it plays to the bands’ musical strengths. Along with ‘Love You Better’ they are tunes pulsing with energy and waste no time grabbing your attention.

Social Gravy decide to slow things down with the last track, ‘A Different Kind’, which quietly manages to stand out from the flow of the EP. Kohn’s captivating voice and Bordukov’s prowess on the electric guitar come to the fore on this tune and it’s another testament to how adept they are at transcending genres.
